Default Re: MSI N460GTX Hawk (1GB) Overclocking Results

SLI benchmarking came to a screeching halt almost two weeks ago when my N650SLI-DS4 system refused to post, only giving a single long beep indicating a memory problem. As of today, the system appears to be live another day after cleaning the memory module electrical contacts and motherboard memory slots with 91% isopropyl alcohol.

The case mods were complete, where I had to drill numerous ventilation holes in the bottom of the Antec Two Hundred case for the bottom mounted power supply. I don't like reversing the psu's mounting position where the fan faces upwards in the bottom of the case, where small screws could possibly fall into the power supply. An added benefit to having the psu fan face downward is that the fan will better cool the psu when it draws in cooler air from the room.

The fan shroud for cooling both video cards is similar to the setup in my original system and there is no need to install the 92mm cooling fan. The Antec case has two 120mm, 64 cfm fans installed in the front of the case and the hard drive cages don't restrict the intake air flow from the front of case. I'll post photos that show video card and fan shroud setup later tonight.

The version 2.0 (beta) fan shroud is much better looking, but it's still ugly as sin.

Thumbs up Re: MSI N460GTX Hawk (1GB) Overclocking Results

    First SLI Heaven v2.1 benchmarks

    No problems with SLI
major problems with onboard audio Realtek v263 drivers!

The top 3 tests are using SLI on my N650SLI-DS4 @ 2.60GHz with gpu = 850MHz (extreme), 850MHz (normal), and 915MHz (normal), from left to right.
Memory for the 3 tests was 4200MHz (qdr).
The bottom 2 tests were with my P35-DS3L system @ 3.60GHz with gpu = 900MHz (from post #32).

I'm currently stress testing my SLI system to see if it will be stable at 3.00GHz.
The SLI tests were not as smooth running, possibly due to the much lower cpu speed.

My N650SLI-DS4 is a crummy overclocker.
My first N650 mobo was stable up to 489MHz FSB before it ate its bios and wouldn't boot.
note: 280.26 whql drivers are now available for win7/vista.

Default Re: MSI N460GTX Hawk (1GB) Overclocking Results

One step forward, one step backwards:
    1) uninstalled the Realtek HD audio drivers, disabled on-board audio in the bios, and installed the HT|Omega Striker 7.1 sound card in the pci slot below the lower Hawk card; no more sound issues when benchmarking
    2) My N650SLI-DS4 POS motherboard is unstable at all cpu speeds higher than a 12% overclock; 2.33GHz --> 2.62GHz
The system is running better with 2x2GB of Mushkin PC2-8500 memory (@ 1080MHz) compared with the 3GB Crucial Ballistix four module setup.

The attached screen-shot shows the results of three Stalker - Call of Pripyat benchmarks using:
    • 1920 x 1080 screen resolution
    • DX11 with Tessellation enabled
    • Ultra preset mode
    • All quality settings are set to the highest options; Contact Hardening Shadow was not enabled.
    Tests included:
    1. gpu = 915MHz, memory = 4200MHz (qdr) and SLI disabled and the red boxes show the gpu temperatures after this test.
    2. gpu = 915MHz, memory = 4200MHz (qdr) and SLI enabled
    3. gpu = 811MHz, memory = 3950MHz (qdr) and SLI enabled using stock Talon Attack voltages/timings
The only explanation for the virtually identical SLI benchmark results is probably due to being cpu bound with my 2.62GHz cpu speed.

For these tests, I set Physx to run on the lower (gpu 2) Hawk video card, not on the (default) upper Talon Attack card.
When running the SLI disabled test (#1), AfterBurner's OSD (on screen display) showed that the lower Hawk card used the same amount of memory as the primary Talon Attack card. I think that this was like running with a single 2GB Hawk card.

With SLI enabed, GPU temperatures were always 5 - 6o (C) higher on the lower video card!!
This is probably due to the cooling fan/shroud providing more cooling to the upper card.
The sound card completely blocks one of the lower Hawk's fans.

GPU temperatures range from the mid to upper 40o (C) range and sometimes rose to 52 - 54o, with a very brief maximum of 62o.

The Hawk Talon Attack is in the upper pci-e slot and has no VRM heatinks installed.
The standard Hawk is in the lower pic-e slot and has all of the aftermarket (copper & aluminum) heatsinks installed.

It might take me a few tries to get the forum-compressed benchmarks screen-shot in a readable format for your image viewing program.

SLI benchmarks, with a 19% higher system overclock from the previous tests.
The system is now overclocked to 3.10GHz, up from the 2.60GHz settings in the previous post.
The current test settings probably aren't 24/7 stable, but the system completed the following SLI Stalker - Call of Pripyat benchmarks.

Current changed test settings for the 3.10GHz benchmarks:
    • 19% higher cpu overclock
    • PhysX setting changed from the secondary Hawk card to the primary Hawk Talon Attack card
    • now using Nvidia Balanced SLI settings instead of Quality settings
    • MSAA advanced setting lowered from 4x to 2x
All other quality options remain at the highest possible settings.
    Contact Hardening Shadows remains disabled.

    3.10GHz SLI disabled benchmark Results
Same settings as above, but simulating the Hawk Talon Attack card running alone.
MSI AfterBurner on screen display (OSD) showed that the "disabled" Hawk card's gpu/memory speeds were 51MHz/135MHz while the Hawk Talon Attack ran using the configured settings. The disabled Hawk's gpu temperatures were ~ 26o (C), while the Hawk T/A's gpu temps were between 15o - 20o higher. The amount of memory used by both cards were identical while the benchmarks were running.

If Afterburner shows memory usage on a disabled card than it's a bug.

PhysX would have absolutely zero bearing on results as Stalker games don't use hardware driven PhysX.

It wouldn't be like using a 2GB 460, as in SLI, cards can't physically pool their RAM. Even when one is disabled it still can't share RAM with the active card. VRAM would require a fast interface over which to transmit data, for example 256bits wide like with a GTX 460. The SLI bridge connector plus the PCIe connector combined would shift only a mere fraction of the amount of data that GDDR5 over a 256bit bus could push. At 4GHz, the VRAM bandwidth would be just shy of 129GB/s, a 16x PCIe lane (some of which would be taken up with other data anyway) plus an SLI bridge connector could barely shift 20GB. That kind of speed would hinder, not help performance.

Default Re: MSI N460GTX Hawk (1GB) Overclocking Results

If Afterburner shows memory usage on a disabled card than it's a bug.
I consider this to be a UDF, unintentioned design feature.

PhysX would have absolutely zero bearing on results as Stalker games don't use hardware driven PhysX.
I mentioned the PhysX setting just to document the changes I made for the test.

It wouldn't be like using a 2GB 460, as in SLI, cards can't physically pool their RAM.
With 1920 x 1080 screen resolution, I doubt that even if the GTX 460 cards could pool their ram, it wouldn't make any difference, as you pointed out in post #108.

My test with SLI disabled was a quick and dirty test to easily show the difference between SLI and non-SLI tests. It's a PITA to physically remove and replace video cards, especially with the gfx fan shroud installed.

If the price is low enough I hope to find a used 680SLI motherboard and an E8400 or Q9550 to test with, but..... I think that a cheaper/better solution is to go with an i3-2100 (~$120) and the least expensive P67 motherboard than runs 8x/8x SLI as my backup/test system. I don't know if an SLI 16x/4x setup would significantly hurt gfx performance with a lower mid-range setup. Right now it looks like most/all lower priced motherboards have issues with sata sockets that are partially blocked when using an SLI setup. This doesn't seem to be a problem with most higher priced motherboards.

My plan is to eventually upgrade my main system to an i5-2500K/Z68 setup in 6 - 9 months.

    Thanks for your comments.

Just wondered why you don't use the standard ms audio drivers? I hate the realtek ones, poor sound quality imo,why not an a75 mb and llano 3850 chip? Even a used x58 mb are cheap now plus 2x 16x pci-e lanes
