Default Re: MSI N460GTX Hawk (1GB) Overclocking Results

I never had problems with Realtek audio on my N650 system under win2000, but using the latest drivers interfered when running graphics benchmarks with win7. I'm OK with using my HT|Omega sound card, even though it restricts airflow to one of the lower graphic card's cooling fans.

I can't justify spending about $250 to upgrade to new cpu, mobo, and memory just to be able to test SLI performance, especially since I don't play games on my pc. I'm going to a local pc recycle store today to look for an older Nvidia SLI mobo to see if I can find a used 750i, 780i or 790i mobo. I don't want to go with a 650i or 680i mobo and don't mind spending about $50 for 8GB of DDR3 ram if needed. If the price is right, I wouldn't mind upgrading to an E8400 or a Core 2 quad cpu. I will probably upgrade to an ivy bridge setup next year.
I will perform some additional tests to measure how much power is needed with highly overclocked SLI benchmarks.

It'd be cheaper to grab 4GB, unless you're definitely going to be recycling it later into another PC, Jim.

According to my Power metre, My PC draws a shade over 550W at full GPU load in Heaven and around 460-530W in most games, inc Crysis 2, Stalker CoP, Resident Evil 5 and Alice MAdness Returns. Not sure what you'd be drawing, but I bet you'd be surprised how little it actually is.

I agree about the upgrade though. Best to wait until you have the cash to spend on upgrading for your other uses. I've just had a look on ebay USA and the cheapest i7 I can see is a 930 for ~$170. There are a couple of socket 1366 boards going for ~75 which is pretty good, but when the CPU will run you over double that, plus you'll need at least a couple of sticks of DDR3 (thoug 3 is optimal) it all mounts up to something best set aside toward a more current platform, even a future platform.

Wouldn't it be nice to treat yourself to a socket 2011 system? Now that it's been confirmed that Quad channel RAM is a definite feature (using a single stick per channel for boards with 4 DIMM slots, two per channel for those with 8) things could start to get interesting in terms of the future of x86 processing. We're well into the days now where the slowest major internal component that's weighing us down is the HDD. Even SSD's are put to shame with a potential to push development of faster and faster I/O as we (hopefully) reach a point where it's the root cause of bottlenecks. So far we see little in the way of adverse performance form a relatively slow storage subsystem.

OK already, I'm ready to upgrade as soon as this motherboard is available, but I think that I'll need to do a lot of case modding

    Naw, never mind.
I'll take out a loan and go with:
    (from TechPowerUP June 6 2011)
    EVGA Readies Dual-LGA2011 X79 Motherboard
At this year's Computex event, we were treated to socket LGA2011 motherboards by various motherboard manufacturers, except EVGA. The company makes some of the highest grade enthusiast motherboards in the Intel platform, and so it was missed. It is however, said to be working on a monstrous dual-socket LGA2011 motherboard based on the Intel X79 chipset, that would replace its dual-socket LGA1366 EVGA SR-2.

Just imagine, such a monstrosity would combine two six/eight/twelve-core LGA2011 Sandy Bridge-E processors with eight channels of DDR3 memory, and four PCI-Express 3.0 x16 (electrical x16) links to drive its graphics cards and connectivity. EVGA said that it will have single-socket LGA2011 motherboards by the time the platform launches, and this dual-LGA2011 about a month later.

    3DMark11 SLI Benchmark Results
New cpu (E6850) running at 3.30 GHz.
These 3DMark scores are ~1000 points higher than a single Hawk video card on the original P35-DS3L system with an E6300 (R0) cpu running at 3.60 GHz.
Additional Unigine Heaven and STALKER - Call of Pripyat SLI tests will be posted soon.

Post #5 has my original 3DMark scores for my single Hawk video card:

    E6300 (R0) @ 3.60GHz, P35-DS3L (F9)

    GPU -- GPU -- Memory --- Memory - Aux -- 3DMark11
    MHz -- volts - MHz (QDR) -- volts -- volts --- score -- Comments -------------------
    675 - +00mv - 3600 ------ +00 -- +000mv -- P2778 -- 460 reference settings
    780 - +00mv - 3600 ------ +00 -- +000mv -- P3052 -- Hawk default settings

In the same post, the single card overclocked 3DMark scores ranged from P3332 to P3473, and I included links to four of the overclocked test details.
A few forum members posted their 3DMark11 test results for their more powerful systems.
