Default Want to Upgrade 4870 to 6950 on GA-EP45-UD3P

    Greetings Tweaktown Forums:

My build is GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard, Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80569Q9550, SAPPHIRE 100259L Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16, Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model 996599, built in a huge Zalman GS1000 Tower that is well cooled with ZALMAN CNPS9900ALED 120mm 2 Ball Low-noise Blue LED CPU Cooler and plenty of 120MM Zalman case fans, Powered by a OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ600MXSP 600W, running Windows 7 64 bit. On a Hanns-G HH251 and Acer X233w and I plan to add a 28" Hanns-D HH281 from time to time. I do graphic arts and video production and not a lot of gaming. I do heavy multitasking I over clock my Intel CPU 775 to 3.4Ghz.

I want to upgrade the video card to the SAPPHIRE 100312SR Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5. Is this overkill for this setup? I mean are their any bottleneck issues?

I would appreciate if anyone help offer helpful information. Thanks

I think it will be fine, you would need a powerfull card with a 28" screen or high resolution, you could go for older 5870 too, they offer same performance but the 6950 is stronger in dx11 tesselation plus it has 2gb of ram

600W PSU may be pushing it in that system, if you can go for 750W if you have the extra cash just to be sure.

Thanks for the info Lsdmeasap. I don't have the cash now but I will definitely get a 750watt psu ASAP.

It may be ok on 600W, I'm not really a graphics or power supply guru or anything, but that did sound a bit small when you mentioned a larger card and you have a Quad CPU.

If you aren't overclocking anything the 600W may be fine, and even if you are overclocking it might be ok too, I just thought a larger one would be more ideal if you were shopping around right now and had the cash to play with.

Okay. I will definitely do some more research on whether 600 watt PSU is okay for the upgraded card. OCZ is a good brand. It hasn't failed me yet.
