Default Problems - SLI zotac amp omeg 980 & asus strix 980

Hello everyone, seems to be a great week for oddities.

Trying to get sli working with these cards. Simply cant select "maximize 3d performance" in the sli section of nvidia control panel, says sli disabled - install sli bridge

I have tried everything except a second bridge (bridge was bnib from gigabyte mobo)

    x99 ud4
    4x4gb ddr4 corsair 2400
    asus strix 980
    zotac amp omega 980

    - under clocking zotac to match (they arent far off anyway, i read it shouldnt matter anyway)
    - overclocking asus to match
    - ensured correct slots (pcie 1&2 <1/3 if going by visual order>)
    - swapped slots
    - swapped sli fingers
    - reversed sli bridge direction

    (atx4p molex is installed :)

    card 1 running @ x16 1.1 idle and gen 3.0 when moving
    card 2 running @ x8 1.1 idle and gen 3.0 when moving
(should it be running both 8x?? i thought i read that somewhere...prob my imagination)

I could be wrong but i believe most mobos support SLI at x8/x8, i would try that as it wouldn't effect performance in anyway.
