Nvidia now expected to dump GeForce FX

    ATI competition heating up

By Mike Magee: Friday 07 February 2003, 11:22

SOURCES CLOSE to Nvidia tell the INQUIRER that the graphics firm has told its partners that the GeForce FX is likely to be discontinued, with the firm instead concentrating on the NV35 platform.
The sources said that the firm has made the move because of an update that its bitter rival ATI is expected to soon roll out of the door.

Nvidia could not be contacted for confirmation at press time, but earlier this week a PR representative said that he "could not comment" on the previous reports.

Insiders had told the INQ earlier this year that Nvidia was only forecasting 100,000 units of the GeForce FX to ship before the end of May.

The boards were all being manufactured by one outsourcing company to Nvidia's specifications, and the partners were expected to re-brand the GeForce FX with their own boxes and different colour fans.

We're attempting to get more on this later today. If the reports are confirmed it's an expensive business for both Nvidia and its partners. At press time it wasn't clear whether the existing GPUs will be sold. But another source told us that it will stick with the ones it already has produced and that are in production, so won't ramp that production up.

It will also wait and see the reaction from customers and press reviewers to assess the right quantity to ship. There may be only as few as 10,000 GPUs currently produced, that source added.

    GFFX Ultra No More:
As we noted here earlier this week, the GeForceFX 5800 Ultra will never make it to retail. Those of you that PreBuy the cards will still get an Ultra model with the FX Flow cooling unit. Those who don't will have the opportunity to get the non-Ultra version (400/800) off the retail shelves for a price of US$300.00. This information is unconfirmed at this time, but has been what we have been told repeatedly by different sources since Tuesday of this week.

Anyone have a working and complete Voodoo5 6000 version 3 or better they want to trade for a working v1.1 GFFX 5800 Ultra? Drop me a line.

Also, at this time it seems that the BFGTech GFFX Ultra is still for sale through Best Buy. Get'um while they are hot...not that they ever won't be.

I think they'll just release what they have already in production and delay strait to the NV35 but by then the R350 will be out so we could be seeing a big circle effect with NVIDIA now trailing ATi ... ATi should savor the moment and come make sure the R350 is already out in full force so they don't give the competition a chance :thumb:

Oh well , ATi , Nvidia , doesn't matter to me , I have no loyalties when it comes to graphics boards , its the quality and performance that matters to me.

    But then again who knows?

Nvidia is just as broke as amd... :thumbs do

I could care less , honestly , who wants to pay more for a product thats louder , takes up a PCI slot and just barely matches and in some cases falls behind the competitions product thats already been out on the market for some time. It doesn't make sense to me

Sure, if you get the damn thing to work, are you aware of how many people there is who's brand new card doesn't work?
Even when used with intel chipset boards?
And MANY that do work have some serious driver issues...

    Nvidia for me, less problems..

    My two cents.

I dunno man , I think its just coincidence the number of people that posted issues. I mean I've had two Geforce 2 GTS's fail on me in the past and one Geforce 3 MX in my other computer. I didn't post any of them online , and when I worked at a PC repair and sales shop , the NVIDIA card returns were astronomicly higher than the ATi returns , I believe I only saw one during the whole year and our volume was huge.

I'd say NVIDIA's faulty cards vastly outnumber ATi's , right now we're jsut hearing more about ATi's because they're fairly new now to the high end gaming market and are under alot more scruteny by the public than NVIDIA who are well established in the market.
