I am thinking about buying a new videocard for my computer. I really can't afford a GF4 Ti 4600 right now, but I believe I can get enough to purchase a GF4 Ti 4200. They have a good deal over at newegg.com for an ASUS V9280TD GF4 Ti 4200 card....but THIS is what I am wanting to know.....I heard that the 64 mb cards are a little faster than the 128 mb cards!! Is this true?? The ASUS GF4 Ti 4200 (128 mb) (8x AGP) with TV out and DVI retail sells for $149.99(US dollars) with free shipping! (I live in the US) And the ASUS GF4 Ti 4200 (64 mb) (8x AGP also) and with TV and DVI retail sells for $125.99(US dollars)(Also free shipping)
Most would say get the 128mb because it has more memory.....but why pay for more memory, if it runs slower on games and gives worse framerates??? (I am asking this question because of the people who say that the 64mb is faster than the 128 mb cards) So would it be better to get the 128mb or the 64mb card for games and graphics????

In most cases the 64MB models use slightly faster memory as the 128MB version is made to a price parity as to give enough room for the 4400 to fit into it's price bracket. I must say though that I havn't noticed any difference with my VIVO models plus they're runnin' very close in speed to a 4400 after I turned the heat up a little. ;)

thanks wiggo! I guess I am going for the 64 mb then.....because I don't overclock my vid cards and the speed seems about the same on most cards with either memory!

I would go for the 128 mg as it think you'll get better performance even if the memory is slightly slower. :shoot3:
The more demanding games will need it.

128mb would my choice as well..128mb seems to give a user a bit more head room on more demanding games.

Yes and in a few month i can assure you that we will have games in wich you will be able to tell the difference.

Doom3 is "rumored" to use 80-100 mb of videocard memory to store it's big textures while playing with all the eyecandy maxed.. Even though it is a rumor, (what isn't?) i don't doubt it a second..

Also, the difference in memory speed is very minor. Usually the difference looks something like this.

(These are made up numbers of about real world size with about real world relation)
128 MB 76 frame per second
    64mb 82 fps

So you gain 6 frame or so per second which you'll never notice, but when you head to high end games that need a full 128 mb of vRAM it changes to look like this:

    (again these number are fake)
    128 - 65 fps
    64 - 35 fps

In conclusion in games that need 64 or less you will see a small if even noticable difference with the 64 mb card being better.

However, there is a huge slow down when a card has to pull textures and such from system memory, so if a game needs more that 64 mb of vRAM you will see a very noticeable difference

Definitely go for 128 as that is the new standard.
Someday I would like to become knowledgeable so that I could do penance for all the stupid questions I have and have yet to ask.

That's the thing now as more and more games come out that require more texture storage then the 64MB versions will get hit. ;)

You'd be much more "future proof" that way. :thumb:
