i am going to buy an ATI card. am i wondering if there is any difference between the 8500 and the 9100? they are both based on the r200 (i think) but is there a difference in the clock and mem speeds? most of the retailers i have looked at don't carry the 8500 unless it's an AIW ($300). and only a few carry 9100's. if the speeds are the same on both cards, it may be cheaper to find a 8500 on ebay!?
also, what is the difference in 8500 LE's and VE's? i've seen these as well. is one better/faster than the other?

    thanks

I have Sapphire Radeoen 9100 64Mb, bought it becouse it was dirt cheap but still decent card.

The biggest different is that Radeon 9100 includes Fullstream technology which is

Is it any use? Well, I havent really noticed anything yet.

Radeon 9100's are also usually clocked a bit lower than 8500LE's (not always, but usually).

Sapphire is 250/230 if I remember correctly. It has slow memory so I have only got it as high as 270/265.

It's still a nice card - faster than 9000Pro's and much cheaper. Performance 'close' to what Ti4200 can offer (and cost only about half of what Ti4200 costs).

Still, I think its not gettting much faster with driverupdates where some newer card might get few fps along the road.

I am happy with it now - but I have already made plans to upgrade it for something better next summer.

I never had 8500LE so I cannot say much about it. Performance wise I think they are about the same.

ok, thanks for the reply. i am looking at a saphire 128MB with 250/200 speeds. it is $140 CAD, which is what i paid for my gf2 mx a couple of years ago. i'm not sure what ram chips the board comes with. i'm not overly concerned with the o/c'g abilities. i just want a good low priced card.

Wait until March and then buy a 9500, the prices are going to drop hard when the R350 hits the streets. Rumor has it that Best Buy is getting theirs on March 3rd. fingers X'd :)

8500's and 9100's are the same GPU...there is no difference betwwen the two - other than the possible difference in clock speeds

An 8500LE is an R8500 with clocks lower than the original 275/275 retail cards...they coul be anywhere from 275/250 to 200/184 depending on who produced it & waht version it is.

    I don't beleive there is such a thing as a 8500VE...the was/is a 7000VE...but it's a single pipeline GPU w/no hardware T&L support - so you don;t want one of those:thumbs do

the Sapphire 9100's are decent cards...the memory on the 128MB is clocked a little low (200MHz) - but I've read that most cards have 4ns chips - so there should be some OC'ability there

the 64MB version is at NCIX for $116cdn - clocked at 250/230 for price vs. perfromance - that's probably the one I would go for :thumb:
