Hey guys, i am a friend of homeworld1031tx, and i have a Shuttle AK31 motherboard with VIA KT266A chipset and VIA AC97 sound. Suddenly the sound on my system has become impaired. when i boot winXp, the log in music skips. When i play any game, within the first 10 min the music skips and the whole machine locks up. i have tried disabling the on board sound, putting in various PCI sound cards and even trying dozens of different drivers, but all to no avail. I have come to the conclusion that my motherboard is damaged. Therefore, to avoid the same problem in the future, i am posting this thread to ask u all the following:

    1) what is a good, stable chipset?
    2) what is a good motherboard make?
    3) i need a board compatible with DDR PC2100 RAM and socket A Athlon XP 1800+.

    Please reply ASAP. Thanks.

    Abit NF7-S

Epox is a great fall-back if you can't afford the Bentley of the PCB, Abit.

    EDIT:
Hey, im still running an AMD761 chipset. You should buy me a board, cause the board you already got is newer than mine.

Personally, to avoid the same problem... I would read and research before I would buy another mobo.

There is no ONE single board that answers your questions.
If you read through a couple threads, it will answer most of them though.

So start reading ASAP and all of your questions will be answered. You will also gain some better knowledge of what is out there, and what will support your current setup as well as future upgrades.

I know its not a bad chipset. I researched my Abit KG7-RAID for 3mon before buying it, and aside from a bad HSF. It doesnt really give me probs. But of course, if its free....

I agree with his order, cept i think Abit is first. MSI is actually a good stuff/$ board. It is a stable, well supprted, feature filled board. It is still a white mans light side board. Travel to the dark side (oc'ing) and you should bring your pals Abit or ePox.
