Thread: $700 too spend on my computer...

I have $700 that I HAVE to spend (birthday) now and I decided that I want it to be on my computer. I play games on my computer all the time and right now I have Planetside/Star Wars Galaxies/Counterstrike all loaded up. I would love to play them all with the graphics turned to the max and be ready for Halflife 2. I mostly play FPS/RPG's (Fallout 1/2 are my favorite games of all time) with a smattering of squad based games (JA 2, XCOM).

With that in mind, and my current cpu in my sig, here is what I have come up with so far:

    512MB Corsair RAM PC-3200C2PT $128.50 (NEWEGG)
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 -Retail $112.00 (NEWEGG)
Plantronics DSP-500 PC Headset $75.00 (NEWEGG)
RatPadz Model GS Mousing Surface Mouse Pad $15.00 (NEWEGG)
    WESTERN DIGITAL SE 80GB 7200RPM-OEM $86.00 (NEWEGG)
Xtasy 9800 Pro Video Card 128MB DDR $300 (Compusa w/rebate)
Win XP Pro/ Win 2k (free)

The total comes out to around $715 which is right in my ballpark. As you can see, besides the video card and ram, I've decided to upgrade my non-performance parts. I have heard good things about the Audigy 2 series and I think it would be an improvement over my current soundcard, which only gives me problems anyway. I see a lot of people using the Western Digital SE series HD's and think that it would also be a good upgrade, plus I could dl a lot more movies and mp3's. The DSP-500 headset has been recommended to me by many CS players and would definitely be better than my 1990 sony discman headphones, which hurt my ears after 1 hour of playtime, ouch! Same goes with the mousepad which I've always wanted to try out.

As far as performance goes I'm not budging from getting the 9800pro, can you beat the price? I think the ram should help me out at least until Christmas and maybe until next summers upgrade. I can't decide on which OS I should install, but I'm leaning towards XP pro. My next upgrade will probably be the next AMD chip (Athlon 64?) but that won't be for a while. I think with this current upgrade I should be able to last until then, plus I will have upgraded some key components that will only enhance my gaming enjoyment.

I would like to hear what you guys think about these upgrades, I feel that I have a nice system in the works but could always use some suggestions/criticisms. Please realize that I can't really put the money in the bank, I have to spend it on something, lol. Thanks in advance.

P.S. Sorry for this long post but I wanted to explain my upgrades to the fullest and no1 responded to my post on sharky forums, lol.

I think you've pretty much got it covered. If you do get the extra RAM then you'll need a new OS, so XP will be the way to go there. Everything else seems like a good choice.

I have both the soundcard and hard drive you want, and I've been more than pleased with both. The price sounds good on the vid card, and you would for sure want to go for Win XP. And as far as I know that RAM is quite quality.

Don't get the WD 80gig SE, check out if Compusa still have the Maxtor 160gig SE.... it's about 99$ AR. The 9800 pro 300$ is nice 1 I think :)

Thanks for the replies, I'm getting the reassurance I need to go ahead with the upgrades :p . I couldn't find the Maxtor HD you were talking about aznginji, maybe the sale is over. However I have decided to go with the 120GB WD SE version instead of the 80GB because it's only $15 extra (again from newegg).

Unfortunately I can't get the parts until the 24th, so now I just have to play the waiting game..........

I was originally going to order the 160GB harddrive from the compusa website but it was sold out by this morning. However I'm on vacation in hawaii right now and using your advice aznginji I checked the local store here and they have tons in stock! Thanks man you saved me $2 and I got an extra 40gb out of it. That is a great deal, 160 gigs for only $100!!! I remember when a 500mb hd was $300.....laf
