Thread: Need a new Heatsink.

  1. Default

Ok, now that Ive started Folding@Home, My CPU is really starting to cook, and since its overclocked Im starting to touch 49C

I want to get a new Heatsink, but I am torn. I've checked through a ton of reviews and such, and have narrowed it down to:

X-Dream SE (Which I cant find anywhere to buy)
    Scythe Kamakaze
    ThermalTake 7+
    or Anything Else Really.

Noise is not really a problem for me, my Computer already sounds like a windtunnel w/ 4 case fans. I need something that I'll be able to use when I get a new processor next year too. Even though I'll I only have a 1600+ I dont mind paying for something I can use in a rebuild. It will most likely be AMD that I purchase next. So can anyone help me out, I'm really looking for best of the best, up to around 30-40 US dollars. Much thanks.

Well, after some research I started to notice that I was hearing a slight grinding sound coming from my computer, this has happened before, and I never though too much, but ebcause I just reoiled all my case fans I started to wonder. So I went and quick stopped my AMD stock CPU fanf or a sec and the noise stopped, (also my mobo went nuts ;) ) so I shut it off, reoiled that fan, and nothing happened, so it looks like its dieing. Which means, new heatsink no matter what. I'm defintely 99% sure Im getting a Kamakaze, as its #1 Cheap, #2 Low noise (unlink the Volcano 12, my other consideration) and #3 Made in Japan, and Japanese are good at building shizat ;)

And Low noise is relative to the 150 dbs my case already puts out :)

If anyone has used a Kamakaze or such, let me know what you think. Danke.

Well screw it, it Volcano 7+ time.

After watching X-Men 2 and getting my mind reset, I went back, took a hard look at all the reviews, and realized the 7+ is the better deal. For the extra 10 bucks Im saving I can finnaly pick up some fan filters and get rid of this damn dust, and perhaps even a Tri-LED Fan or 2 :)

Ill let the 14 people who looked at this post know how it went :)

Sounds good...but you have to remember...fan filters will restrict air and you won't have such a good flow...which in turn will not help cool down that well.

Thanks Flaco, I actually tried some home made filter ideas since that last reply, and have decided against them. They totally kill the awesome 32 CFMs of airflow each one of my evercool fans is pushing, and after using pantyhose/dryer sheets, my system temp went a few degrees up, and sent my already failing cpu cooling over 50C, making my mobo flip, basically, decided against filters, will spend extra money and another can of air :)

Volcano 7+ is good for it's price but it sucks bad compared to Thermalrights SLK947 which you can fit with any 70, 80 or 92mm fan that fits you noise/performance/price range.. :)

This is what I mean about price varying from country to country. A V7+ here costs $43aus and the SLK947 costs a whopping $99aus without a fan, so for that sort of price it would certainly want to perform better but not many ppl here want to pay that sort of price then have to buy a fan. A YS Tech 70mm TMD fan here costs around $16.50aus, 80mm non-LED fans start at around $10aus up to $20aus and 92mm from $15-$30aus.
