Alrighty, my Mom is letting me build a rig to keep at her home, and I have configured a few. The first, with the 9800pro, will end up with an FX5600, as she will let me swap the two and put the 9800pro in my 2.4c rig.

    Rig #1
    • EPoX nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU, Model "EP-8RDA3I"
    • AMD Athlon XP 2500+
    • Kingston ValueRAM Dual Kits 184 Pin 256MB(128MBx2) DDR PC-3200
    • POWERCOLOR RADEON 9800PRO
    • Western Digital 20GB 7200RPM
    • Raidmax Model 228 (Blue/Beige) 10-bay Case
    • Some old CD-ROM, KB, Mouse and monitor I have lying around

    Rig #2
    • ECS SiS 755 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 754 CPU, Model "755-A"
    • Athlon64 3000+
    • Buffalo Technology 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200
    • AOpen GeForce4 MX440-8X
    • Western Digital 40GB 7200RPM
    • Lite-On Beige 52X32X52 CD-RW
    • Raidmax Model 228 (Blue/Beige) 10-bay Case
    • Some old KB, Mouse and monitor I have lying around

    Rig #3
    • EPoX nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU, Model "EP-8RDA3+"
    • Athlon 2500+ Barton
    • Twin Buffalo Technology 184 Pin 256MB DDR PC-3200
    • POWERCOLOR RADEON 9600PRO
    • Western Digital 40GB 7200RPM
    • Lite-On Beige 52X32X52
    • Raidmax Model 228 (Blue/Beige) 10-bay Case
    • Some old KB, Mouse and monitor I have lying around

I may get the first listed, as it will do the minor gaming and mainly web browsing I'm aiming for, and get me a 9800pro in my main rig.

    What do y'all think?

    for you or your mum?

if it's for you, then the A64 with a 9800 pro instead of the MMX 440

For me to use at her house. I'd do Athlon64 with a 9800pro, but I'm on about a $600budget

I've never been a fan of ECS or SiS chipsets so I'd drop no.2 right off but even though no.3 uses a slightly older mobo it seems to be the better buy on paper.

Perhaps, but the SiS 755 is the leading Athlon64 chipset.

Sadly, its not because the only people that make boards with that chipset right now are ECS and Jetway. Basically, overclocking is pretty limited.

I would recommend the ASUS K8V instead.

If you play a lot of games go with the XP 2500+ / 9800 Pro setup as it will be WAY faster than a bottlenecked A64 that is constantly waiting on the vid card...

    FX5900 - 3DMark2001 [20,566] - 3DMark2003 [7,281] - Aquamark3 [56,694]
    Ti4400 - 3DMark2001 [16,028]

It will actually end up with an FX5600, as the 9800pro will go to my 2.4c machine, if I go that way

The funny thing about SiS (just like ALi) is they always seem to do well in reviews but none that I've ever had my hands on perform as well in real life and some can be quite a trial especially when ECS (or any other OEM manufacturer) is added to the mix.
