Im looking at getting something better than a little old xp1700+ thats overclocked all to hell.
and as I was researching the different setups, I found that most top end chips are in the same price range (within 10%)
About 200bux can get you one of these:
    Opteron 144 1.8GHz 64-Bit 1MB Cache
    Athlon 64 3000+ 512K L2 Cache 64-bit Processor 2GHz

This raised a question in my head, why is the price between 64 and Opertron soo close? the speed difference is minimal, but the cache gain is huge. So would getting an Opertron be better than going with the 64? I do think so as the Opertron has the 940 pin socket that is going to be new standard unlike the 754 that athlon64 uses.
LMK what you think. or if im missing something here

No, S940 is not going to become the standard, that is going back to being server chips only. The rest of the A64 family is moving to S939.

The A64 will will clock better than the 1.8Ghz Opteron.

The Opteron setup will cost quite a bit more, as you need a S940 board that runs you $50 more than S754, and you also need registered RAM.

    s754 will not last long.
    s940 will. Server or not.

Also i was under impression that A64 is going to need registered ram too

S754 is at least lasting through this year.

S940 is being used for only server chips, not A64 or FX.

And no A64 has never needed registered RAM.
