Hmmm $1000 is your limit eh?

    Processor: P4c 2.4 ghz $160

MOBO: make sure you get a mobo that is 875 chipset. If overclocking is
not too important, than forget Abit. Mobos are either made for
OCing or features. Buy a features board that offers moderate
overclocking. i myself like Asus, but you can get whatever you
really want. The ASUS P4C800-E is a great board and is the one i
    have. I runs $175

RAM: Get some kind of pc3200 or pc3500, at least 512 A gig

Heatsink: Get like a Thermaltake spark 7 or something $50

PSU: Anything that has at least 400 watts. It should run about $60 or
so, maybe more. Make sure it weighs a lot. Heavier ones are
    better.

Case: Whatever is preferrable in taste. It should cost about $100. Don't
get one that comes with a PSU. Not a good deal.

Soundcard: You shouldn't need one cuz the one on your mobo should
kick major ass, with 6.1 surround sound i think.

Optical: Get the Lite-On 52X32X52....for $35 it is a steal.
    DVD....that is up to you.

HDD: SATA 160GB Seagate Barricuda for $120.

There you go that should be it for about $860. With a little extra why don't you go out and get yourself XP PRO for another $120. Believe me, it is worth it! Good Luck!

There's not much difference between an i865PE chipset and i875 chipset performancewise, teh i875 will be a bit faster though. If you want an i875, go with an Abit IC7. As for RAM, get 1GB of Corsair PC3200 CAS2 RAM, which has low timings of 2-3-2-6 (with a little more voltage). The stock heatsink and fan that come with a 2.4C will easily take it to 3GHz, so dont bother buying an aftermarket one. Get an Antec 1080AMG, its a great case with great air flow (5x80mm fans), and comes with an Antec 430watt PSU, which is top notch and plenty of power.
As for a video card, get a 9800Pro It's one of the best video cards out there, especially for $212.

The other stuff techno gave is great stuff.

    -MSI GF4 Ti4200 128MB @ 284/581
    -7200 RPM Maxtors: 60GB (2MB) on mobo and 160GB (8MB) on ATA/133 PCI Card
-Creative Inspire T7700 7.1 Speaker System on an Audigy 2

    120, 121....whatever it takes.

    ;)

These responses are just what I needed. I'm not "capping" myself at $1000 (my caps never seem to fit anyway!) but don't want to spend four grand on a new machine. At least, not if I want to keep the wife somewhat happy.

I think it's about time to put it together! Maybe I'll post a success story soon.
I just ate two dozen Krispy Kremes, and I feel fine.
