    The KM400 (or even the KM266) is a great chipset for an office PC but be warned that they can have big probs when a video card is inserted into them. They are best when usin' the onboard video but that's only good for office apps and web surfin'.

    Well this machine will be used for somewhat high-end gaming. Think I should go find an nForce 2 mobo then? :?:

    Either an nForce2 or if ya lookin' budget as ya say then a KT600 based one (even a KT400/A should do for that CPU so long as they don't won't to stick a 400DDR FSB CPU in it later).

    This oneis dirt cheap, but refurbished and has no reviews.
    This onehas good reviews but is more expensive and still refurbished. The one bad review came from someone too stupid to read OEM, Barebone
    This oneisn't refurbished but has some bad reviews on top of being more expensive.
    I'm having trouble deciding if I should even go with one of these, much less which one.

    I'd also like a second oppinion on the video. $138 just ins't feasible but a crappy card is a bad idea too. :(

    Hmmm... well, here's my crack at it, forgive me if I missed it, but whats his budget? I'm guessing $300 or so, cause thats what hte other system was at.

    Mobo - Shuttle AN35N $65, cheap as hell, very upgradeable, etc.

    CPU - Barton 2500+ $80

    RAM - 1x256MB Kreton 3500 CAS2 $49, thats a friggen steal (most PC2700 will be $40 anyways)

    HDD - 40GB 2MB Cache Maxtor $53, good drive

    Case - Generic case, 430wattPSU $25 I just built a system using one of these, dman good deal if you ask me. It looks great, 430watt is generic, but it can still put out enough for a normal system, and ITS $25!!! Buy two cheapo 80mm fans for it and go

    Hmmm... thats up to $270

    Video - Radeon 9000Pro $78, almost as good as a Ti4200, and $80 is a great price.

    That adds up to $350, little high, but all that stuff is fully upgradeable and a real steal. I guess if you wanted to save some cash you could get a cheapo OEM mobo for around $50, maybe a worse CPU, but he'll screw himself over by being penny wise and pound foolish (pound being performance in this case). Although I would check in on Compusa, they sell maxtor drives with their label on them really cheap. This 60GB I have was $45 after a $5 rebate, and its a great performer.

    Anyways, tell him to think about it. I mean, $350 is pretty damn cheap and that isnt that bad of a system. I'm 16 and make $100 a week working at stop and shop (for gas/car insurance), I cant believe he cant come up with $300 over time.

    Well I won't buy a refurbished item but if ya must then I'd go the MSI (I'll stay away from ECS at all costs) but that video card is a VIVO model and newegg do have a Jaton version of that for a few $'s less but there are a few 128MB FX5700's there for even less.

    The budget is about $250, not including video and some other unneccesary compnents. $350 with. He probably can't get a job ATM. He doesn't even have all the money needed anyway, but he'll get it eventually.

    Thanks for those links, nice deals on some of that.

    Case with 430W PSU
    40 GB Maxtor
    DDR PC3500 256MB
    MSI KT600 Motherboard(cheaper than the shuttle)
    Barton 2500
    Thermaltake Volcano 10

    Total = $268.49
    With the video and CD-RW\DVD ROM combo (both found in first post)
    Total = $381.48
    Pushing it with the video and CD-RW, but I can convince him to wait on the drive. The Maxtor was a bit more expensive than the one I found, but I trust Maxtor.

    Ok about the gfx, if he refuses to spend more than $100us, then get him a r9000pro. This is the best low priced card around if you can find one. Go take a look at that chart on that other thread and see how they compare to any other low priced card. They usually oc nice as well.r9000pro
