it is not possible to unlock the multiplyer unless you get an older processor most after week 39 2003 are hard locked and all after about week 42 are hardlocked.
buying a cpu now its guaranteed that the multiplyer will be locked

EDIT: here is the evidence. http://www.emboss.co.nz/amdunlock/ i found it on the first page of a google search for "amd barton multiplier lock"

And did you look at the result directly below that? It's called "Unlocking a week 39 or later AMD CPU (Update)"

if you read that it says that to unlock it you have to turn the processor into a mobile which is not supported on all chipsets. the nforce2 is not supported and thats the main chipset for overclocers to use. and its an nforce 2 that DeaDLocK is buying. so it would be pointless for him to attempt to unlock a hardlocked chip.

Which is exactly the problem... I don't know of anyone ever getting them to work on the Nforce 2 chipset. But you still can turn them into unlocked MPs. However, on the Nforce 2 chipset you really can't take advantage of the unlocking AFAIK.
But like I said, the 3000 should still perform better with only FSB adjustments than an unlocked 2500.
I doubt it matters, though; DeaDLocK probably didn't want to try to unlock anything anyway.

The reason why im going for a AMD 3000XP 400FSB is due to the fact I dont want to OC asap. If I bought a 2500 M or any other good OCer than I would be needing to OC it out the box to get the performance needed for the high end strains I will put on the CPU.

Anyway this machine will still be more than suitable for my needs and the price is fine. :D

a 2500 at stock speeds will still be very fast. my mate uses an 1800 with a geforce2 mx400 and he can play games fine

Ok its been awhile I have done lots of reading taking notes and calculating... and god damn does picking the right system take it out of you.

Anyways I would like to hear some feedback on this setup...

    CHIEFTEC MATRIX (Green)
    LANPARTY NFII ULTRA - B
AMD ATHLON XP-M 2500+ (MOBILE UNLOCKED)
    THERMALTAKE VOLCANO 12
    CORSAIR 1GB PC3200 (2x512)
MAXTOR DIAMOND MAX 120GB 8MB CACHE
    MSI DR8-A2 DVD+/-/R/RW (Black)
    APLS 1.44 FDD (Black)
    HERCULES 3D PROPHET 9800 PRO 128MB
    4x ZALMAN 80mm CASE FANS

Total price - 660 Inc VAT
    Also includes delivery.

This is not a prebuilt system

I have now thought about the 2500m after looking at alot and I mean alot of OC benches... One I noticed that OCed very well with great ease was one using the LANPARTY NFII ULTRA - B mobo... So I did some looking into that mobo and it seems to be a very very stable ocing mobo... Loads of support and very good tweaked bios for download.

    Well what you guys think???

I don't see anything wrong with that (assuming that HDD is SATA, they do make IDE versions of that). I might spend extra for PC3500 RAM if I wanted more overclocking potential, but PC3200 will work just fine. Also make sure the RAM has good timings.

The HDD is IDE so that will be changed once I find a fast SATA 10000RPM lower than 100 I have seen a 36GB one which is 60 but I think I may need more space but I could get that for the time being and then buy another or upgrade it later...

The RAM is Corsair XMS so thats fine.

Other than that do you think its ok... And will it keep HL2 going.

It should run HL2, Doom 3, STALKER, and anything else that comes out within maybe the next six-eighteen months. You can get higher framerates and such with a better system, but this won't be playing anything a low settings for years.

OC the hell out of that thing. It should perform amazingly well for its price.
