Yeah, they work. They won't burn out or anything, but you'll need a propper HSF for OCing.
Wrong there, the 2500+ is normally easily put to 3200+ speeds on the stock HSF with AS.

Ok I found the web site for this Artic Silver but the technique for applying it looks rather involved.
Is it as tricky as it looks or do they make it sound harder than it is?

I have just installed windows 2000 as I dont have xp and am wondering if you guys install all the programs that come with you mob? for example I have just installed all the drivers and now I am installing the gigabyte for windows tool and the gigbyte management tools etc. Is this worth doing?

You need only apply a paper-thin coat of Artic Silver to the top of the processor parts that contact the heatsink (not the rubber bumpers on an AMD chip). Do not get it on any contacts that may be exposed on the chip. As far as the apps on the mb cd, some you may find some interesting or useful, others not so much. I've found Norton Ghost on Gigabyte cds before, along with AV software. There may also be audio apps and mb monitoring utilities of meager value. Try them. If you like them, use them. If not, get rid of them.

Even locked ones? Huh... I knew they were good for OCing, but not that good. Oh well....

as long as the voltage doesnt need increasing to get 2200mhz then the stock cooler should be fine. some need a bit extra voltage though (like mine).

Yeah, quite often people can just bust the FSB up to 200mhz without touching the multiplier and maybe add 0.25-0.5v If you have adequate case cooling the stock HSF can handle a little bit of voltage

Thanks for the help guys. I think I need to do some serious reading before I ask anymore dumb questions
Is there any sites or threads on this forum for finding info on basic PC and overclocking etc?

well I have found a lot of info on the tweaktown guides page and tomshardware.
So just out of intrest I changed the FSB to 200 and bugger me the screen says I have an AMD 3200+ instead of the 2500.
so I ran the game I have and it all works fine I have the same problems with the graphics in the game I have when the system is set to stock settings. I then checked the cpu temp and it had climbed to about 68 degC
I think I have an idea of what I need to buy to correct my grtaphic and heat problems can you guys take a look and let me know what you think?

480watt antec PSU another stick of twinmos 512, 3200 same as whats in already, 1 new copper hsf and some artic silver (not sure what the best HSF is any ideas?) and 1 set of speakers.

68C is mighty hot, though a new cooler and such will help that a lot. What was the case temp?
