Well, you're one of the lucky ones. I ran that OS for probably a month and then went to Windows 2000. It was slower than 98 in gaming, crashed more than 98, and installed extra stuff I couldn't unselect by default. For the majority of people, it was this way. I felt like it was more of an excuse to buy the latest MS OS, just because it was newer (and I fell for it). If it works for you, great. But for many of us, it was more buggy than it's predecessor. Of course, now, the Windows NT core is much better than the Win9x core.

Hmmm, well the 1.0 Ghz dinosaur I have now was my first PC - I never had '98 but like I said I had no major issues with WinME.

Thanks everyone for the comments! When I get a chance, I'll update with the revisions, going to a SETA HD, etc.

    ******** UPDATE *********

Here's where I am today, still holding off on the purchase:

Case: NO PS - Antec Super LANBoy Aluminum Mid T $88.00
    Power Supply: PS 460W - Enermax Whisper EG465P-VE(FC) $70.00
    Motherboard: Abit AV8 K8T800 Audio/Gb-LAN/IEEE/USB/SAT $109.00

    Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 512K (939) Retail Box $359.00
    512 MB DDR (400) PC-3200 Corsair (VS512MB400) $89
    512 MB DDR (400) PC-3200 Corsair (VS512MB400) $89

Far Cry Promotion: FREE Full DVD Version of Far Cry
    Mitsumi 1.44 MB 3.5" Floppy Drive $15.25
    Seagate 160GB Barracuda 7200RPM 8MB Cache SATA $129.00

    Sony DVD±RW DWU18A 4X-DVD+-RW/8X-DVD+-R/12X-DVD/40X32X24-CD-RW $95.00

    Order Total: $1,041.25
I bought a good keyboard for $19 and the MX510 for $50 at CompUSA, so that's off the first list. I also got WinXP for $70 since last I posted. Looking above it seems that prices dipped a few $$$ on parts here and there - always a good thing. Maybe if I procrastinate long enough it'll eventually be free :)

What I like about this setup is that almost all the parts (and case) have good reviews on the issue of quietness while still being reasonably priced. My main question remaining is on the motherboard. I see the ABit 3rd Eye, Asus, and MSI Neo 2 boards... am I missing out on something important going with the cheapest I could find?

Also, is there a good, cheaper DVD writer with decent read access times (I don't care about write speed) or is the Sony about right?
