Default Need a Critique on my Wishlist for Friend

Spending limit is $800 , live in Cali so take tax into consideration.

I was thinking maybe instead of athlon 64 3000 getting a barton 2500. have a Sound blaster live soundcard already.

You might want to look at a 3100 Sempron. It performs just slightly worse than the 2800 Newcastle but costs a good $25 or so less (or it will, anyway). It's not at Newegg yet, but it's out so Newegg will get it very soon. With the money you save turn that 9600XT into a 9800Pro.

Also, I'd look for different RAM. It doesn't advertise timings and runs at a CAS latency of 3. Look for something better. Look for something like 2-3-3-7 on either a pack of 256MB sticks, a single 256MB stick (which you get twice) or a single 512MB stick.

You could also consider just going with this build. Make sure you read the whole first page (if not more). If you're willing to overclock, this may be perfect for your friend. Otherwise, look at a socket 754 setup with either a Sempron or low-end Athlon 64.

Coo, only going to counter on one thing and that is the ram. I have it, very good ram. Also, Maximum PC, a magazine that has never steered me wrong, highly recomends it on any sort of budget. Thanks for your time :)

How do you define it as very good RAM? Becuase it works? Unless you can get it to run at 2-3-3-7 timing or better, there's much better RAM out there for not much more money.

Call me a newb but I have to question why a well-known pc performance magazine would recomend bad ram for people when corsair can be afforded as well. I highly doubt they have a "deal" with crucial recomending thier products..

No one's saying it's bad RAM, but there are much better choices. It comes as CAS latency 3, which is way too much.
