Eventually Window XP 64-bit will come out and it will offer some performance improvement, but an Athlon 64 is still your best bet, even in 32-bit. It'll work just fine, too.

There is a 64 bit edition of windows, it is beta though, and when I tryed to get it from microsoft the email they sent me (that included the download link) none of the links worked so I dont think they are offering the free beta download anymore. I wouldent recomend most beta sotware is you are going to be using it as a server. Expesialy an operating system, the heart of the computer, no operating system, no computer.

You wont be able to overclock the weaker prossecer higher than a 3500 without really good cooling therefor you would be spending the extra money you would put into the better processor on cooling i recommend you go for the 64 chip in the end you will like the results a whole lot better.
