Default Dual Optrons good for gaming?

My buddy is considering a Server setup(dual Optrons) for his "ultimate setup" would this be a wise decision? Or should I tell him to not waist his money?

Don't waste the money. Go with an Athlon 64 FX53 if you want to spend that kind of money.

You could also get an FX55... Not much reason to get an FX53 since it's just a 4000 with a completely unlocked multiplier rather than a partitally unlocked one. It's also a lot more expensive than a 4000....

A 55 is also a hell of a lot more expencive than the 53, as it is the best processor out there in my opinion, others may disagree.

Think of server processors as dump trucks. Really powerful with a big load, but they can't go that fast. Think of gaming processors like sports cars, really fast. That is just how I explain it to my 5 year old cousin :)

Dual Opterons would be very good for gaming if:

    a) Games were compiled for 64-bit computing
    b) Games were designed to take advantage of Dual-CPU's

But most games are not designed for either, so you would be wasting your money. That is, unless you are a Professional geek that uses his PC for more than mere gaming. But if you were a professional geek, you wouldn't be asking such questions in the first place, now would you? :)

It is worth mentioning that 64bit/dual-cpu ready games may not be too far down the road. The popularity of the A64 family and the advent of dual-core CPUs will see to that.
