What is the best heatsink and fan that I can buy for my 2.8 ghz pentium 4 ( northwood ) processor, running on a intel 865 perl motherboard.

Well you can start with a Thermaltake Volcano 7+, Spark 7+, Zalman CNPS 7000 and go all the way up to a Thermalright XP-120 if it fits your mainboard and wallet.

I checked on the thermalright and it said that it was only compatible with 3.2 ghz and above. Would that be compatible with my 2.8 ghz northwood?

It will still work with your 2.8C just as it would with my 2.4C but then my 2.4C is running at 3.5GHz with only a Volcano 7+.

Ok that's cool, just curious did you notice any difference in the performance when you switched from a normal heatsink and fan? Several people have told me that switching doesn't really make much difference.

I couldn't get a boot above 3.12GHz with the Intel HSF but I can get it to boot at 3.6GHz with the Volcano 7+ but 3.54GHz is stable.

I'm in New South Wales but also keep in mind that not all processors are the same so I can't say that your CPU will prove to overclock as well as mine does (though it could turn out to be better but then again it may not).

I am just curious but why do they say that it is compatible with 3.2 ghz and above. What does clock speed have to do with if the heatsink is compatible?

It means it will be adequate for processors running at 3.2ghz and above
