    Default 6600GT vs 6800

Should be a pretty simple question...which is a better bang for the buck... http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...130-202&depa=1 or http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...150-080&depa=1.

I dont really want to spend the $360 for a 6800GT, so I have pretty much cut it down between these two.

If your buying the card for video games......
I'd say the 6600Gt would be fine for all the video games out there today as long as the rest of your systems up to snuff, the 6600Gt is suppose to be a little faster than my card at most things. I'm using an ATI x700 pro in this system with a P4 3GHz CPU and I can run Half-life 2 smoothly at 1280x1024 and all the settings maxed out BY DEFAULT. If you wanted a card like mine you could get one for around $105 refurbished at Newegg, and I can vouch that the card along with the drivers are the most compatable I've seen to date with any P.C.game out there, and I have just about all the latest popular software titles available for the P.C. (No lie!:)). What more does a person need than that for testing purposes?

I own a XFX 6600GT AGP version, here are my systems specs for preferences.

    Asus P4P800SE for Socket 478
    P4 w/HT Tech 2.6GHz@3.25
1Gig of PC-2700 Ram (You need some PC-3200 or it will have lag spikes in fps)
Newegg has some Corsair Value Select Ram for a steal deal of $86.00 I think.
    XFX 6600GT AGP8x
    Sound Audigy 2 Value Series
Western Digital 80 gig w/2mb buffer IDE connection
    450 Watt PSU

I get good gameplay at 1024x768 max settings No AA or AF on all my games.
UT2k4, Farcry, CoD, CoD UO, Halo, CS:S, HL2

I get an average of 50-75 fps. I get 7410 on 3DMark03, kinda low due to ram speed and possibly the HD.

I bought mine also for the price, it's a great budget card for $189.00 (it may be cheaper now) and it works great.

TweakTown did a review on the 6600GT AGP version for Gigabyte.
That in itself may reveal more true potential and OC'ing of the card. Also giving you a better idea of how it performs. Here's the link.

Personally if you cant afford a 6800U I'd get a 6800GT and unlock the other 4 pipes with RivaTuner, thats the best bang for buck option i've seen.

You meant 6800NU right? GTs already have 16 pipes..

cough, choke, ummmm, yep, typo, sort of, lol, please forgive me.

Though not all early gt's were 16 pipes the newer runs are, there were some gt's that were 12 pipes, and unlockable, this was dependent on the manufacturer.

Cruise over to Guru3D forums and search for 6800gt unlock or similar, you will find heaps of people who have unlocked 12 pipe gt's.

Hi, I found this post via google search.

I'm also looking at the 6600GT(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127150) and the 6800NU(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130202). I have $221 as my max spending limit, and I know I wont be able to get more. My current specs are:

Enermax Whisper II @ 460 Watts
    Athlon 64 3000+(1.8 not o/c'd) Winchester
    1 gig Geil(2x512) PC3200
    120 Seagate Barracuda
    GeForce 4 5200FX(not o/c'd)
dual monitors, 17" dell and 15"(i think, might be 17") Compaq both running at 1152x768(can go higher)

I love gaming online. I'm completly new to the whole idea of overclocking. Its not that i'm computer illiterat(as i'm my schools tech team, and web team) i've just never messed with it. same with unlocking pipes, not a clue as to what'd do me or how to do it .

    Any suggestions greatly appriciated...

$199 for a 6800 after the rebate? What's this world coming to?

Get the 6800. That's a great deal for such a powerful card. Don't worry about unlocking pipes or even overclocking, for now. That card will probably run whatever you throw at it just fine.
