You'll definitely need a new one. That one just ins't worth upgrading.

Warhammer 40K DoW is a great game. I'd say it's my favorite RTS right now.

Generals should run on that system, the Minimum sys specs for the game are as follows: PIII 800GHz, 128MB RAM, 32MB Video Card, 1.8GB HD, try turning down the video options in the game until the game runs smooth enough for you to play, also close any programs running in the background on your system.

Warhammer 40K might be tough to make playable on that system since the games minimum spec are very close to your systems specs, PIII 1000, 256MB RAM, 32MB video card with T&L support. Your could try turning the graphics settings all the way down in the game and see what happens.

The kid that made your system was probably just tring to save your parents money at the time and used cheaper parts, so maybe a high end system was not in the picture and instead cost was more of a concern to your parents when purchasing that system however long ago that might have been, it doesn't mean he didn't know squat about computers.
I do agree that you could use a better system if your into high end games like HL2, a simple upgrade probably won't make a huge difference, so a new system with a higher end video card in it would be the best bet. Also some of the newer RTS games such as B&W 2 and the upcoming Age Of Empires 3 are rather system demanding, so a new system would be a good way to go if you plan on playing new releases in the P.C. video game department or even if you want to play dated games such as Generals at a mere defualt graphics setting or higher.

The video card is the biggest problem. It has to be upgraded.
