Question Help me upgrade my gaming PC

    Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade my gaming PC although I'm unsure as to what component(s) would give me the best bang for my buck.

So far I'm looking at either getting an HD4890 (although this would only give me a 10-15% increase in performance over my current 512MB 4870), or getting a better CPU.

My rig is in my signature. Budget is around AUD$400 (~USD$320), anyone have any suggestions? I've gotten some great hardware advice from here in the past and I appreciate any suggestions you may have.

Well as you say the 4890 is not going to give you all that much in extra in graphics power.

And you allready have a quad.

Personally i cant see much that would be a good value for money upgrade, unless you have specific games that you would like to be able to run better, is this the case?

I Personally just spent my 400 aus (I live here to) on a new OCZ 60GB SSD for my main drive, then used my older 150GB Raptor to install my Program Files on. I have found this to be well worth while as my PC acts instantly all the time what ever i am doing, Games load much faster i Feel and the whole PC is so much more responsive. The HDD is the biggest bottle neck in a PC ATM.

    Thats my 2 Cents :)

what were you thinking putting quad core on a gaming pc when you are trying to get better value for your money? for gaming like a 3.3Ghz dual core is better than a 2.6Ghz quad. If you REALLY play games alot you could tell the quad, add the $$$ to ur $400 and get a monster dual.

    OR

your GFX card is pretty good, although you might want to buy the GTX295 which is about $450 AUS.

Thanks for the reply - I'm seriously considering this. This may sound like a silly question, but do the two cards need to be the same brand? Like if I got another 4870 512mb but it was a Powercolor and not a Gigabyte. Should be fine because they're the same chipset right?

Hi Gigadeath You most certainly can CrossfireX 2 different brands of ATI GPU's. In fact they don't even have to be the exact same GPU. Here you can use the Combination Options Chart to verify your combination and combatibility. ----> ATI CrossFireX? | GAME.AMD.COM

Wow, thanks for the link artdrivers, I had no idea. Looks like I'll be taking advantage of Crossfire for sure.

I'll be getting a Gigabyte 1GB 4890 to crossfire with my existing Gigabyte 512MB 4870. From what I understand, there will be two caveats:

    1) There will still be only 512mb *total* VRAM, not 1.5GB
    2) the 4890 will be downclocked to meet the 4870

    Is this correct?

Yes on the memory degrade no on the gpu degrade. Please be sure you use both bridges the one you currently got with your 4870 and the one you are getting. It is always best to CrossfireX 2 of the same but not neccesary to work. Here is more on this.---->
