Default External Hard drives work on the fly?

Do external hard drives work with a simple click and play?

For example if I transfer a movie over from my computer can I simply start up an external hard drive and click the movie to play? Or do I have to take the files and resend them back to a computer then play? The external hard drive is connected to the computer.

Any recommendations on at least 1tb, usb, around $100 external hard drive for sale?

yes, it is just like installing a second drive or running something from a thumb drive.
