    Default Which GPU

    Hey, all

I haven't read up much about the new PCIe 2.0 x16 cards and stuff and the lanes. I'm trying to help a friend out but can't really do to not knowing OOPS lol.

I guess I can say it this way....

He has some Foxconn; forget the model, motherboard with the onboard HD3200 and a Phenom 9600 Agena @ 2.3Ghz....

What is the best card he could get so he won't loose a lot of performance. Or should he just buy new hardware altogether....

He was wanting a 5850 or maybe he can convince himself to get a 5870 but I'm not sure how much performance if any he'd lose as opposed to an AM3 board with a 2.0 x16 lane. He just has a first gen x16 lane....

Does he even need AM3 or are there any good AM2/AM2+ motherboards he could get that support his CPU; cause he doesn't have a crap load to spend at best 800 from his tax returns, and not really bottleneck either of those too bad?

    Thanks all,

    Later....

So how long was I gone lol... the site like totally changed... I thought it expired or went away lol. I was like no, not Tweak Town, they're nicer in reviews than some sites I've seen and forums of some said sites are also not as nice lol.

Your friend has 780G motherboard with that IGP so therefore that is second gen PCI-e already. No performance loss if we are talking to sockets between AM3, AM2 or AM2+ they matter only to CPU supported, RAM clock speed and HT. If there maybe performance loss it could be on the HT but that is negligible, may 1-4 fps. 5850 or 5870 are good candidates and make sure his PSU can support additional 180Watts.
