Both cards offer similar performance, but some cards do better with some games.
Which games do you play most often?
What brand/model/size monitor are you using?

We can best help you after you add a detailed hardware list to your forum signature, including brand names and model numbers.
Be patient and don't bump your thread.
Do you want me to remove "or HD 6950 2 GB" from the thread title?

    What is your motherboard brand/model?
Does it support SLI or Crossfire? If yes, do you plan to use a dual video card setup in the future?
I'm pretty sure that the 6870 models are near EOL (end of life) as the newer 77xx and 78xx cards have been released.
You might be able to find some excellent closeout prices for the 6870.

If you check video card reviews for either card from top tier review sites, you should find benchmark comparisons for many of the games that you play. Forum members with similar video cards will post their opinions over the next several days.

Keep in mind that this weekend is the Easter holiday and members might be tied up for several days.
Let us know which card you eventually end up buying.

I use Asus M5A78L-M LX and it does'nt support crossfire or sli. I've olso not planned to buy dual video cards in future.
I have spend almost four hours on reviews and all. Most of my friends suggested me Nvidia instead of ATI.

Indeed, but my budget is 280$ and most of 78xx series are above that. 77xx review's are not good at all, I don't know much about Nvidia new releases.

From what I've seen, the 6870 is better than the newest 77xx cards.
I mentioned the newer 7xxx cards only because it looks like vendors are beginning to discount the older 6870 cards to clean out their stock and not have the 6870 compete with the 7xxx cards.

Some prefer Nvidia, some prefer AMD/ATI.
I bought two high end GTX 460 cards and have overclocked them to the max without any problems.
The GTX 560 Ti benchmark scores are about 25% better than either of my MSI Hawk N460GTX cards.
I like the video card reviews at HardOCP because they give a lot of weight to "playability", not just benchmark scores.
You can easily search for gpu reviews by manufacturer's name at HardOCP.
Keep in mind that with either brand, there are lower end and higher end cards for each model type.
Some cool better than others, and some will be quieter overall, that's why it's important to read quality reviews.

User reviews can be helpful, but it isn't easy to determine how qualified the user is.
As an example, I bought my first 460 card about 16 months ago to upgrade my 7600GT video card.
If I had purchased the lowest performing GTX 460 card, it still would have been 10 steps higher up the performance ladder than my old card.
16 months ago I wasn't qualified to recommend a video card, now I'm somewhat qualified to give advice on mid-range cards :)
I did my homework and was confident that I would get the most bang for the buck by buying higher end cards in the GTX 460 family.

I think that you'll be happy with the performance of the 6870 or the GTX 560 Ti.
The GTX 550 Ti is not in the same league with either of the above cards.

The OP is from India, so we don't know if his 280$ is "USD" or what it will buy locally.
