I've used several brands and X values over the years and never had a problem with any of them. I pretty much shop for price now. The only feature that seems to differentiate them is slot load or tray load, and that's more of a personal choice I think. If you buy a boxed version, you might pay attention to the included software if that makes a difference to you.

Lite On's are very nice. I would just make sure you look for search time's. The lower the better. Generally try and stick with name brand's as they will last longer and be more reliable.
New Sig soon, old one was way outdated.

I have had really good luck with ASUS drives, I have an asus 8x right now. I scored off eBay for a pretty sweet deal.

Pioneer drives work for me. :) They are all much the same really. As long as it's a common brand it'll do the job.

I use LiteOn DVD's as their price and qualiy is good plus combine well with their CDRW's. ;)

I backup my games reading straight from the DVD burning on the fly and it's done in under 3mins (approx 600-640MB). :D
