Hi, guys i was wondering if you can help me out. Christmas is comoing up and would like to build a new rig for my lil neice. She is 12 and knows her things on the computer. I can only build her something around 500-600 bucks. Thats too much for me right now. I was thinking more around the 300 range; but everytime i finish something on a wish list it ends being around 600 Us bucks. Anyone have any combos. Intel or AMD it doesn't matter.

    My original was:
    AMD 1600+
    KX7-333
    256 DDR 333
    Lite ON 48x burner
    Lite On 16x DVD
    Case (obviously)
    Vol 9
    2 80mm Case fans
    Seagate 40GB HD
    GF4 MX 64MB DDR
    16 dollar sound blaster.

Throw any ideas at me (not bricks) ... or make a rig up and send me link if you like...i know it seems a bit of an too much of a rig for a 12 year so make anything decent.

    Athlon XP 1600+ - $39
    Asus A7N266-VM - $70
    256MB Generic DDR - $60
    Generic CDROM - $20
    20G HDD - $55

TOTAL - roughly $260 (assuming I can add)

That should have you covered. You will probly want extra things like mouse, keyboard, floppy, case/PSU etc. I'm sure you can find those yourself. I'm also assuming you dont want a monitor. But yeah, thats about as cheap as I can come up with.

Is there a difference between the A7n-266C to the A7N-266VM that i should know about besides the price. Maybe some incompatabilties?

No onboard video. You save money becuase the C is cheaper, but then have to fork out for a video card, so end up losing money. It does have more PCI slots though. I would still go with the -VM, much better value.

OK, finally did some ordering...final rig for the niece is as follows:
Enermax Case 350W PSU, 5 80mm fans and one 120mm front fan.
Asus nForce OnBoard sound/LAN and GeForce2
    AMD Athlon 1700+ (stock cooler)
    Western Digital 20 GB HD
    Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM
    Sony 40X Burner
    256MB of Crucial 266 Memory
    Floppy
    Creative V.92 Modem
    Black Mouse and Keyboard

I think for a 12 yr old this computer is rather decent...i think it will rock. I bought the retail AMD w/ the factory cooler. I'll use some artic silver for it and see how that goes...i do not plan on overclocking at all with her computer since i am looking for stability.

Any comments are welcome...and past experiences with stock cooling on NON overclocked AMDs are also welcome...thx again.:)

As long as the case has a bit of ventilation and you arent running the machine in a hot climate (Brisbane at the moment, 41C today >_<) then the stock cooler will do the job fine.
