I saw a rumor on the LKML last week that said intel might be changing the form factor of the PIV (again), I don't know if it's true or not but going on their past performance I'd not be surprised if you woke up one day and found out that you'll need to buy yet another PIV mobo for a new cpu because the number of pins has changed again.
AMD seem to be committed to socket A untill the Athlon64 becomes mainstream.

Yes I have thought of that as at least the socket A platform carries on in the Duron's role for another 2yrs they expect atm but w/ Intel who knows? :?:

Ok this is the choice now for my new shop PC and the "Multi-boot" option is now not necessary with this one.

In the green corner still is,

Athlon XP2400+
EPoX 8RDA+
UNEEC windowed case

GF4 Ti4200 My VIVO (from Thunder)
2x 256MB PC2700 (temporary donation)
Samsung 40x12x40x CDRW
WD JB400

maybe changed still

and in the blue corner weighin' in still as an unpopular choice so far is,

Intel P4 2.4GHz 533QDR FSB
EPoX EP-4PEA+
UNEEC windowed case

GF4 Ti4200 My VIVO (from Thunder)
512 MB stick of PC2700
Samsung 40x12x40x CDRW
WD JB400

maybe changed still

So can anyone come up with something else? :?:

well, I guess if you don't need more that would answer it...... personally I stick in as much as I can afford / have the space for.

maybe you don't use them, but for data analyses or graphics modelling programmes I need as much as I can get my mitts on... at work I actually need  over 1Gb in memory.

at home I only have space for 512, and I use that for video streaming and photo-editing.... just makes life easier, I guess.

Well I don't push the memory that way so it's plenty but if I do jam extra memory anywhere then it will be into Thunder which if ya check it's specs & pics ya'll see why it will become the server (checkout that huge mobo). ;)

It will also be the first one to be changed over to full Linux once I work that out.

surely a server just needs to be a workhorse?
it doesn't really need fancy graphics/sound cards, DVD (especially a non RW) etc, does it? unless you are using it for non-server usage as well.

but IMHO I thought it was best to keep a server separate from daily usage?

Ok, it will loose its video and sound cards and get a GF2 MX400 for the video (its card will go into the new one) and the SB 5.1 DE I'm not sure where that will end up yet. The DVD will also go else where it will wind up.

My server is only a server though it also cruches SETI but I guess that ya missed the 4 extra IDE channels on the mobo though? A bit hard to miss them bright red things. :(
