but why bother with Linux? really, I mean, how many of your potential customers are likely to use it?
A few here have already hinted at it plus I don't want a server runnin' a business that's M$ controlled ;)

fair enough, but at the end of the day, aren't you being controlled into using Linux as an alternative?!? heh, just a thought.....

personally, as much as I dislike the M$ attitude you're stuck with it.... a bit like the Beta/VHS video debate as well.... or the MAC/PC debate.....

M$ will still run on the others, just not the server which will be better off workin' under Linux anyway as there's little fat to push w/ that os plus less of a security risk. ;)

yeah, ok, that seems sensible to minimise the security risk.

can I make a suggestion? is there any way you could make a back up HDD such that if you got hit you could do a straight swap whilst you tried to repair the hit one?
(do you have the facilities / kit to do such a thing?)

Those extra IDE connectors are RAID 0 and/or1 capable so I can mirror drives w/ it. Two HDD's a data and two others to mirror the info for backup. ;)

The point behind learning and then using linux for a server/router/firewall is that you can remove all the windows security flaws from the equation, including email viruses (they realy should be called outlook viruses because they only work because of outlook). The best way to secure a windows network is to put it behind a linux firewall and filter all email through a linux server.

Well I have done a lot of homework on this and w/ the need of a new PC I'm makin' sure this way that I cut down on the amount of possible pitfalls that I'll likely hit. :)
