Thread: How much benefit does one derive from faster DDR?

    I'm trying to figure out if it is worth while to pay for faster than 2700 DDR. All the reviews I have seen simply run benchmarks and say... it runs faster when it's run faster.

    Does anyone know of any reviews out there that actually see how apps react to higher speed RAM?

    Why do all RAM reviews seem to suck?

    I can't answer a couple of your q's, but I can address the first.

    If you plan on overclocking your system, faster ram helps you acheive more stability at higher FSB settings. If you don't plan on overclocking your processor, the faster ram is nice too because you can set your ram timings very agressively, and get more performance outta 'em (barely noticable in day to day applications, but you'll notice a little bit more throughput in benchmarks like sandra2003).

    As for knowing of reviews... well, I personally just search google, and come to sites like tweaktown for my reviews on hardware. If the reviewer doesn't give me enough information then I go and find a few more reviews to compare to one another, etc etc. For the most part, the ram reviews ya see online are all decent (at least in my books).

    Thanks Suicide. Please pardon the semi-rant.

    But I have read quite a number of reviews and most simply quote a benchmark, but I want real world apps so I can know what to expect and decide if it is worth my money.

    I want to have at least 1GB of RAM, so 2700 is $160 vs. $220 - $340 for 3500.

    The point I guess I'm trying to make is: I have a limited budget and I want to get the most out of it. If faster ram gives a sufficient improvement then I'll pay, otherwise I'll spend the money on something else that will.

    And I couldn't care less about my score in any benchmark because it rarely gives a good indication of how real apps will react.

    Well, like I said... If you want performance, go with the xms3500 memory from corsair... but get the low latency memory (cas1.5). That will improve your performance, but if your budget don't call for it, get the pc2700 ram.

    The question is not can I put 3500 in my budget the question is, is it worth the money to do so rather than spend it on something else.

    That?s the tough question that no RAM review I know of tackles.

    If you think you might overclock or heavily tweak your system, go for the faster stuff. Otherwise buy the PC2700 (so long as it's not OCZ RAM)

    I don't know how you like to spend your money man :) What I do know is, I would rather go with the xms3500 and run my ram very agressively, even if I wasn't overclocking... Or if I was, use it to my benefit to eliminate stablity issues from the memory side of things. It's your call in the end of course, but like I say, I don't know how you want to spend your money so I can't answer that question... All I can say is, for me, it would be worth the money.
