I'm building this comp for something to fool around with and i have more or less decided to get the following hardware, feel free to speak up if you see anything that i should change. I think this mobo could be a good choise cause it's really cheap and also supports better processors in the future. This is not going to be a very high end machine but it will suit me just fine for the apps i'm planning to run on it. Anyway specs as follows:

    Intel Celeron 1700 Mhz $58
    Volcano 7+ $24
    512 Mb pc-2700 333 mhz ddr cas 2.5 AMD OK $64
    Microstar 845PE Max2 6 channel audio $98
    Point of view Ti 4280 8x AGP 128 Mb tv-out $159
Western Digital 80 gb SE 8Mb cache $109
    Logitech Z-540 4.1 $74
    Aopen HQ48PRO-A miditower P4/AMD ATX 300W $69

Btw i'll have to ask ya one thing, in the specs on the msi board I found this:
"Note: FSB533 CPU is required in order to choose DDR333 selection in the BIOS setup."

Now I CAN still run 333 ddr but only at the lower 266 speed setting right?? Or do i have to get slower memory in order to run it with my 400 fsb celeron..:?: Just want to make sure..

Oh well I think that's about all.. /T

You can still use PC2700 memory just fine :)

Thx for that info, it will be intresting to see how this rig performs, 128 kb L2 cache is it's big downside..

For that price couldn't you put together an AMD system with an Athlon 1800+ or so?

    Wouldn't that be more powerful?

Both the lower FSB and L2 cache will show a huge gap in performance compared to ya P4 (even if overclocked to the same clock speed).

if your're trying to save some $$$'s a Radeon 9100 video card will give you 90% of the performance for about 50% of the money compared to a Ti4200 (At least that's true for the prices I'm being quoted right now)

it's got plenty of power for a Celeron based system at least.

I would go for a slightly more expensive athlon. You will definetly be better off with it in the long run.

Ok you all got a point there, the thing about this ati cards is that i have sutch limited knowledge about them, please help me. These cards are about the same price which one is the best buy of those listed?

Hightech Excalibur ATI Radeon 9000Pro 128Mb DDR DVI TV-out Retail AGP

Hightech Excalibur ATI Radeon 9000 128Mb DDR DVI TV-out bulk AGP

Sapphire ATI Radeon 9000 RV250 128Mb DDR TV-out DVI Retail AGP

Sapphire 3D Atlantis Radeon 9100 128Mb DDR DVI TV-out Retail AGP

As for motherboard I have looked at this one:

    ASUS A7N8X nForce2 5PCI 1AGP8x 3DDR-DIMM ATA133 LAN USB 2.0 6CH-Audio SocketA ATX $127
(The epox nforce2 is about 5$ cheaper but what the heck.)

    CPU:
    AMD Athlon XP1800+ Thoroughbred 1533MHz/1.533GHz 256Kb 266MHz 0.13 bulk SocketA $72

    RAM:
    Two sticks of TwinMOS 256Mb DDR-DIMM PC2700/DDR333 184pin 333MHz CAS2.5 (AMD OK) both modules is $64

This cpu, ram & mobo makes it about $50-60 more expensive than the celeron but this can be reduced if i get a ati instead of nvidia. The question is which videocard i should chose of the ones i mentioned??

Also a big site here in Sweden claims that Nforce2 chipset often works bad with western digital hdd's, not all but some westerns depending on their different firmwares which makes it impossible to specify what models. They say the risk to run into trouble is so big that they don't reccomend people to build them together.
What's up with this? I have never heard of it before..

    Later.. /T

Well for the graphics card i would go for the 9100 128 mgs as that has better(little but enough) power.:thumb:
