Is there really any difference between brands of memory? or is it just go with the cheapest you can find for whatever type you need?

There is slight differences, mainly in the overclocking performance. I knwo that Corsiar XMS will generally overclock more, and some will accept better CAS timings, but if you plan on running it at normal settings, then go ahead and get what ever is cheapest (within reason, no valueRAM:P).

A general rule of thumb that I use is never purchase generic or house brand RAM.

I use Corsair XMS in PC's that do "darkside" exploration and Kingmax for general stock use.
