    Good Morning (UK time;) ).

Normally after formatting my HD, I Install win 98, then xp as a fresh Install on top. But how do I Install windows xp from a formatted drive? Allways confused me that one, do you just put the xp disc In then reset the pc?

Do you mean, change the boot up setting in BIOS to boot from the cd first?:?:

You should not have to change the boot order as long as the cd-rom drive comes before your hard drive. Just make sure there is not anything in the drives listed before cd-rom ( floppy, etc.)

When you reboot it should have a screen come by that says hit something to boot from cd (i forgot which key) just hit the key and it will boot from the cd.

Somewhere in the install process it will ask you for you Widows 98 cd to verify that you qualify for the upgrade, but it will not install files from that cd just make sure you have it.

When the install process completes you should have a clean install of Windows XP without all the junk left over from Windows 98 (which can really slow down your system).

This is how I do it.

    1. I set my CD ROM drive to be the bootup drive in the BIOS.
    2. I then insert the WinXP CD in the CD ROM drive and reboot.
    3. As the screen says “booting from CD” I keep pressing F8.
    Windows then enters Windows Setup.
    4. At this point you should delete your existing partition, and choose to install Windows on it. It will then create a new partition which you can format with NTFS (recommended).

Everything else is fairly straightforward from there.
