You can still use DX9.0a with your card ... I do with mine. There is no problem using the newer DX software with your card. It will, in fact, improve some of the functions that your card does support. I have heard of people reverting to previous DX versions but it is not as easy as rolling back a driver because it embeds itself somewhat deeper into your system.

3DMark2001SE should work with DX9 so long as you are using the latest updates to 3DMark2001SE (build 330). I did notice a slight drop in my benchmarking scores when I updated to DX9 but the newer drivers have more than corrected that problem and the graphics seem a bit cleaner and clearer.

Just to clear some things up, and hopefully get you out of tweaking and into fully enjoying your machine ;)

    1. DX9.0a is backwards compatible and as said above, it works just fine on cards which donít fully support DX9.0, so keep DX9.0a. Also you canít uninstall or roll back DirectX Ė itís a core component and once updated you can only really get rid of it with a full Windows reinstall, so donít do that.
    2. Use the latest 330 Patch for 3DMark2001SE (and thereís also a 330 patch for 3DMark2003) to make sure both these programs run properly under DX9.0a.
    3. Even then, if 3DMark (either version) doesnít run, but you donít have any other graphical problems, then donít worry about it.
    4. I personally donít use any themes in XP except for the default Windows XP theme, and I think if youíre having any problems with your new themes that you should switch back to the original MS theme for optimal performance.

There you go, now start enjoying your PC and donít do too much more tweaking because it sounds like everything is running just great :)

PersianImmortal and PrairieDawg, I just wanted to say thanks for having patience with me and helping me resolve these problems. It's great you give your time and support to this forum. Also, another big thank you to PersianImmortal for the great guides you have done. I look forward to new work from you! :thumb: :thumb:

In regards to the DirectX problem, I will just let well enough alone and not try to revert back as I don't want to do a reinstall of the entire OS (especially after I just got it running the way I like it). And I will d/l and install the 330 build patch that you guys noted in hopes that the 3DMark2001 program comes alive for me (already applied that patch to the 03 product w/ no help).

Last, but not least, as noted I think I will just skip the themes as they seem to give me little qwerks that I don't like (like slightly slower performance, plus the Add/Remove menu won't work). So I'll just uninstall and go down the road. Besides the "silver" MS theme is beginning to grow on me a bit. Not quite as nice as the OS X GUI, but nonetheless, not as boring as the classic Windows theme.

    Again, many thanks!!

    Take care,
    LogixRat

logixrat you are very welcome. I find it an honor to actually be able to give something back to a forum that has helped me so much. Someday maybe I'll have a question that you know the answer to.

I too wish to return the favor to my fellow geeks, so I will be visiting these forums occassionally and peep in when I have something I feel is valuable to the coversation. Right now it's kinda weird for me because I have been using a Mac at home for the past couple of years, and consequently tweaking those. Granted I have been using Win2k at work, but I don't get much tweak time to really know the ins and outs, ya know (other than that OS is simply rock solid). Either way I look forward to learning more and helping more as well.

By the way, I did get the 330 patch applied to the 3DMark2001 proggie, and it works beautifully for me now. I still find it odd that the 03 program won't, but I suppose I'll let lying dogs be for the time. After I ran the test on the 01 program, I got a result of 4110. Is that pretty good? I noticed that Persian had a 4800 or thereabout, but I also noticed he had a much more beefed up card than me.

Again, thanks to all. I look forward to posting more in the future.

    Take care,

Heheheh...3DMark comparisons don't quite work that way. I get 4810 in 3DMark03, but my system will get over 15,000 in 3DMark01 - the two versions don't use the same scale :)

The point of 3Dmark isn't so much for comparison with other machines anyway, it's more for testing to see if the tweaks you're doing are making your graphics faster or slower. So start with the current 3DMark01 score, record it somewhere and as you keep tweaking check back with 3DMark01 to see if your score is the same or better. If it's falling you know your tweaks are not helping system (esp. graphics) performance.

Oh wowsers, I didn't realize the 2 programs tested so differently! :o So like you said, I'll just use the 01 benchmarks to compare against future tests I run after new tweaks and what not.

Again, thanks for sharing your wisdom with me. It has been much appreciated.

    Thanks!
