When using the disk cleanup util in system tools on c drive, it starts running with hd light then after 20 sec it the hd activity ceases and the app hangs. This maxes out the cpu @100% in task manager and after reboot it's fine again. The process that does this is cleanmgr.exe
Also, in internet options when I attempt to delete the temp files or cookies, it also does this cpu @100% thing. I can delete them manually and they are gone.
Norton 2002 with todays definitions and antitrojan 5.5 both come up negative.
The only event that I suspect may have caused this was I tried to do defrag (It said no can do without 15% +1% for system. So I freed some space and defragged).
Since then (two days ago) this cleanup problem persists.

Thanks Wiggo. I never really liked the idea of compressing old files anyway. That function was probably meant for small hd's. Thats not the first time I have seen this problem. But it's the first time it happened to me. It now works perfectly. Any ideas why it happened in the first place?

Found a side effect. All system restore points from before the fix are gone. Therefore I think it had something to do with a mistake that system restore made.

Disk Cleanup can clean all the system restore points, but the latest one, to save more space but it will do so only if you ask it to.
another thing to look out for is how much space you have assigned to system restore. if you have less space assigned and the new restore point is large then system restore can delete all the previous points itself to make space for the new point.

I was waiting to do system restore. To get rid of msn 6. I did restore but it made some saved stuff go away? So I undid the restore until I could get the saved stuff finished and saved to disc. That's when the problem started. There was at least 10 points to choose from and after the fix, there was none. Since then there are a few new points. I still see it as a good tradeoff, I would rather know this fix (now tweak) than get rid of msn6. Thanx again Wiggo.

I think I will include that fix as a tweak into my regular routine as the first thing after an install. Since I see no reason to compress anything as that would slow things down when those files are needed again. They would need to be uncompressed before using them, taking time. Not to mention, now it only takes 1-3 seconds to find out how much space can be freed instead of up to a few minutes or more(usually about 30 sec). Also it would prevent this problem from ever happening again with the compress old files feature removed for good. I have seen this hanging problem before on compaq, hp, and dell but not on a real computer until now.
