Was this a fresh install or an installation over the existing copy? If an overwrite install, then start fresh. If it is a fresh install, then install the SP1 as they took care of most of the shutdown bugs regarding WinXP. I've had no problems at all for some time now.

Thanks Darthtanion... It was a clean install and sp1 has been applied. There are a bunch of updates on the Window$ Update site that I am installing now. I hope that works but I have my doubts.........

Well, I have installed all the Window$ updates and the laptop still reboots instead of turning off. I have checked the Compaq site and they say they have no driver or software updates for that computer. Looks like I'll just have to put up with it!! :grr:

Unless someone has any other ideas... :thumb:

    Found this site:

At least it shuts down now. It will have to do until the the exact cause to be isolated.

Disabling the “restart on system failure” feature: Right-click on My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab. Under “Startup & Recovery,” click Settings. Under “System Failure,” uncheck the box in front of “Automatically restart.”

Guess next step will be a BIOS update... If I can find it..

No asklepios, the computer shuts down but reboots again unless I hold the power key down. Of course I can never catch the key in time to keep from getting the "Previous Failed Boot" error the next time I turn it back on.

But I disabled the “restart on system failure” feature so it does shut down now... Everything works fine, all I have to do is figure out what caused it. (Or should I just leave well enough alone?)

I have searched the Compaq web site and there are no new driver or software updates for XP, and I can't find anything about a BIOS update.

if u r not getting a BSOD then look into event viewer.
you can actually leave it happening if you don't have any major problems but you then might get a solution.
