Whenever I boot WinXP, the OS runs chkdsk on my D drive (SATA from Western Digital). It's only been acting like this since I downloaded a Windows Update a few days ago. Task Scheduler is disabled, and I've run chkdsk on D myself, finding nothing. There appears to be no program running at startup (viewed thru msconfig) that would expalin it. Any thoughts? This is annoying. :thumbs do

btw have you tried letting it complete? are you trying to cancel it before it starts? if yes then let it complete just once.

I tried both letting it complete, and interrupting it. I just changed my registry, as per that link you sent me, and will know if it worked soon.

Ok, the reg tweak worked. But now I can't defragment the drive because diskkeeper has detected that the drive is scheduled for checking by chkdsk. This is b/c either the user requested it, or b/c the OS has detected something wrong. Grrrrrreat.

    this is from Diskeeper FAQ
    http://www.executive.com/diskeeper/faqs/faqs.asp#eff12
the link to MS KB linked in there does not work. the correct link is this one
    http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q176/5/04.ASP

if you plan on doing that chkdsk /f again then please remember that you will have to revert the changes you made to registry or you will not be able to perform the chkdsk operation.
