OK, here's some screenies of the new features in WinXP SP2 (Beta). I don't have the beta, and providing links to the Beta is illegal, so don't ask. The screenshots are from iexbeta.com, and show the new Built-in IE Popup blocker:

    Internet Connection Firewall:

    Automatic Updates:

    Windows Update V5:

    Thanks PI,

Nice to know we will still have some choices about when and what we put on our computer.

Your effort at getting the information is appreciated!!!
If you think you know what I know and think you see what I see, than why are you asking me questions?

Yep, just want to demonstrate that it's not all bad news. The built-in popup blocker for example looks like it will come in very handy. More options for the built-in firewall are also welcome.

As with anything that MS is set to release (like SP1, Longhorn, SP2), there is a lot of scaremongering and idle speculation about invasion of privacy etc. In reality MS doesn't want to cut its own throat by becoming too much of a Big Brother, so even though they already have the technology and tools in WinXP to determine things like whether you're using pirated software and music, they don't dare act on it without fear of losing most of their customers.

this can be done by slipstreaming the drivers into the original cd so it has your sata drivers in it

www.msfn.org has all the gory details on how to do it, it also will show you how to create a dvd with all favourite apps to install automatically with out touching the pc

Uh perhaps im missing something, but Windows does not need anything special to run an SATA drive.

There is no "driver" for it. You can plug in a new SATA drive into a new MB and install windows onto it for the first time just like you would any other IDE drive...it is no different.

Changes to Functionality in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2

This document focuses on the changes in Windows XP Service Pack 2 and its implications for developers. Examples and details are provided for several of the technologies that are experiencing the biggest changes. Future versions of this document will cover all new and changed technologies.

    Overview
In Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2, Microsoft is introducing a set of security technologies that will help to improve the ability of Windows XP-based computers to withstand malicious attacks from viruses and worms. The technologies include network protection, memory protection, safer e-mail handling, more secure browsing, and improved computer maintenance.

Together, these security technologies will help to make it more difficult to attack Windows XP, even if the latest updates are not applied. These security technologies together are particularly useful in mitigation against worms and viruses.
This document specifically focuses on the changes between earlier versions of Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 2 and reflects Microsoft’s early thinking about Service Pack 2 and its implications for developers. Examples and details are provided for several of the technologies that are experiencing the biggest changes. Future versions of this document will cover all new and changed technologies.

    Documentation Download @ Microsoft
Requires M$ Word or compatable software. Apparently it crashes wordpad. OpenOffice.org's Writer does open it however. ;)

*The documentation is 110 pages so it's clearly not for everyone.

New service pack will offer more protection if you don’t have Intel inside

IF YOU OWN an AMD 64 processor, the upcoming Windows XP service pack will have extra security features.

AMD and Microsoft have announced that the latest Service Pack 2 will use AMD’s enhanced virus protection technology in combination with Microsoft’s Data Execution Prevention in the upcoming Windows XP SP2. They claim that the combination will prevent those nasty buffer-overrun exploits and prevent them from replicating and spreading to other systems.

Marty Seyer, vice president and general manager, AMD’s Microprocessor Business Unit claimed that AMD and Microsoft were taking a "leadership role" with AMD64 processors and the upcoming Windows XP SP2. He reckons the result is "effective and easy" for customers using either 32-bit or 64-bit systems.

"AMD and Microsoft recognise that it will take a strong combination of hardware and software to battle malicious code," he said.

The service pack will only work with AMD64 processors that are enabled with AMD’s Enhanced Virus Protection for the upcoming Windows XP SP2. Windows XP SP2 is currently in beta and is expected to appear in the second quarter of 2004. µ
