    G'day all, just recently, I noticed after boot up my system opens with a Notepad page with the following info

    "[.ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell 32.dll,-21787"

    I can close it and all appears normal.

    I've also noticed just about everywhere I navigate within my system each page had a "Desktop" Config File containing similar or varying info.

    Canm't recall installing any new proggies lately. Have done a check for spyware, a reg clean and system scan with latest definitions {Norton @k3}

    Any ideas appreciated
    :cheers:

    None of those scanners pick up most Trojans. Try a trojan scanner like The Cleaner.

    Well, all seems clean there [using "the Cleaner".
    It appears all these config files refer to icons [thanks to the kids I don't have a default icon on the machine :rolleyes: ].
    The are all called "desktop"
    Hiding system files has no effect.
    I'll keep trying diff things

    Now that I think about it, it's normal for the file Desktop.ini to exist in certain folders. Here's the contents from one Desktop.ini file I found in the C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\ directory:

    [.ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@shell32.dll,-21765

    That's normal. I'm pretty sure that file gets created when you view a directory in Icon view using Windows Explorer for example.

    I believe you can delete them all without any issues at all. Keep them in the Recycle Bin just in case though. As for the notepad opening on startup, just go to Start>Run>MSConfig and look under the Startup tab. It might be that your kids accidentally dragged a Desktop.ini file into the Start>All Programs>Startup folder. You can remove it from there too.
