    i am running windows xp home, when i try to run disk clean up the status bar only moves three notches and stops, it says that it is compressing old files. i have let it run for over 8 hours and yet it fails to complete. any suggesstions?

    How long have you had Windows installed and not ran Disk Cleanup?

    Well, that may have something do with it, but it shouldn't take that long I don't think.

    Just do it some of the stuff disk cleanup does manually. Open up Internet Explorer, click Tools, Internet Options. Click delete cookies and delete files. If you have never done this or run disk cleanup for four months, you might have so much in Temporary Internet Files that Disk Cleaup just can't handle it. I have see that happen on a lot of computers that are't maintained.

    exactly what i was thinking, but you should also clear out the prefetch folder. then run disk cleanup again and let it run till it finishes
    I've gone too far and need to move on!

    To keep this on-topic...

    Make sure you do this regularly from now on. Use disk cleaup, do it manually, or get another program to do it for you.

    thank you, cleaning out the prefetch did the trick, diskcleanup ran quickly after i cleaned the prefetch:D
