I wonder if anyone can shed some light on this. I have recently had problems when I have closed down XP pro. Everything visibly open closes down, however one of the background process called rundll32.exe refuses to close down properly. A window opens with WIndows trying to shut it down - it fails and I have to close it down manually. I'm not sure what this program does - I've scanned it with McAfee anti virus but it does not set off any alarms - any clues as to what's gone wrong here ? What is this program ? Am I missing a core component ?

    Confused

The fact that it isn't closing down properly is kind of wierd. Have you recently been through some sort of tweaking guide or used a program like Cacheman? Those can cause the "waiting for process to terminate" windows to pop up because of registry changes that make Windows impatient (putting in in very simple terms). I'm not really sure where to start with this. I guess post a screenshot of task manager and msconfig startup tab. (CTRL + ALT +DELETE for task manager and start>run>msconfig>startup tab for msconfig). CTRL + Print Scrn will take a screenshot. Paste it in Paint and save it.

Try a spyware scan using Adaware (in my signature) if you haven't already. You can also try using a different antivirus program. IMO McAfee isn't that great. AVG (in signature) is better. Don't worry though, this program isn't a virus or spyware. I imagine there are viruses and spyware programs that use it, though.

Did this just start happening? Is there anything you can think of that you installed before it started to happening? And does this happen everytime you shutdown Windows?
