    1. Where do I shut off the highlighting of newly installed software?

    2. I set up a friends computer with more than one user. After a while it apparently logs the user off and returns to the login screen. My thinking is that because of this, it is not running the maintenance programs (Speed Disk, Spybot, etc.) at night. What's the deal with this? Is there a setting I can change that will keep a user logged on overnight?

Question one: In the start menu properties

Question two: I've never known users to automatically log out. Not in my experience anyway... so I'm not sure about that one.

I didn't ask the guy's wife. It could be that she's logging out and I'm not aware of it and have to tell her not to.

Thanks for the help with the highlight. I had seen it before and looked where you said it was, but missed it and couldn't remember where it was.

are you using XP Home or Pro?
if it is pro then you should have a look in Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc). iirc there is a setting known as maximum session period or something like that. you should see whether it has been set up or not.

Well, to make things simple, if you want to take the "highlight" function off of the start menu just go to the Start Menu properties by right-clicking, then task bar, going into properties, click on the "start menu" tab, then click on the customize button.

You will see the "Customize Start Menu" window open up.

Click on the Advanced tab, near the top uner "start menu settings" you will see a checkbox that says "Highlight newly installed programs."

Just take that checkmark off and hit OK 2x's and your done.
