    Default Windows XP/2000 boot problem

    Hi all,

    here I am again with another problem....

    Firs of all some pc specs:

    hard drives: 1: maxtor 40Gb IDE primary master
    - 1 partition 8 MB unallocated space
    - 2 partition 50 MB Logical FAT32 Partition ( bootloader - Powerquest BootMagic -)
    - 3 partition 10Gb NTFS Primary partition ( Windows 2000 )
    - 4 partition approx. 29 Gb of unallocated Space
    2: maxtor 80Gb SATA third master
    - 1 partition approx. 79 Gb NTFS Primary Partition ( WinXP)
    - 2 partition 8Mb unallocated space
    ok, now lets start!

    I recently installed fedora 2 from some cd's that came with a linux magazine on the 4th partition of my 1st drive. ( NOTICE that the partition configuration I have written above is the one I've got now, cuase before there was no FAT32 Logical partition - therefore I used to use linux grub bootloader - ).
    Installation proceeded fine till the end.
    When I rebooted the bootloader appeared and so i selected the linux operating system to boot, but the computer would immediately reboot without showing any error messages or something, it would just....reboot!
    So I decided to boot windows from the bootloader ( at the time my pc had two windows XP operating systems, one on the IDE drive where now is currently installed windows 2000, and one on the SATA drive still intact.)
    and the pc wouldn't boot at all again....DAMN!! :(
    So i deleted everything on drive 1, yes.... I formatted!
    I then decided to install windows 2000 on the IDE drive ( i'm currently posting with explorer 5...yeeehaa!) and have a look at the system with powerquest PartitionMagic 8.
    After that i thought that installing a bootmanager would solve all my problems. So I created a FAT32 Logical Partition with the bootloader currently in it and set it to dual boot Windows 2000 Professional on the IDE drive and Windows XP Professional on the SATA drive.
    Now, Windows 2000 boots perfectly of course, but Windows XP doesn't at all.
    So I realized that before, when I had installed the two Windows XP's on my two drives, the boot files were on the first drive ( IDE ) soo when I switched on the computer the first drive would start, load the boot.ini file and give me the possibilty to select which windows xp to boot ( IDE or SATA ).

    Now it doesn't do this anymore. ( of course.....)

    So again I thought to modify the boot.ini file on my windows 2000 and configure it to dual boot also windows XP; I googled a bit, found lots of guides but none would satisfy my interests. In particular I'd like to know how to set the boot.ini file correctly and know if I must paste some important boot files on my Windows XP SATA drive so that it will boot correctly.

    sorry for the long post, but i want to be as specific as I can. :)

    cheers,

    mad_alfred :)

    I don't think TweakTown has the user base to deal with this type of question. I certainly can't give you a very relaible answer, although I could come up with something. You should go here.

    sure, here's the boot.ini file that's on the IDE drive. this boot.ini file should be able to boot also my windows xp, but it doesn't....

    [boot loader]
    timeout=10
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microso ft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

    ....my modo is a p4p800 and the second hd ( windows xp ) is connected to the S-ATA controller.

    thanks for the reply! :)
