    Default Boot and HD problem

    Hi amigos:

I've been experiencing a boot delay/idle problem the last couple of months, and heven;t been able to get rid of it...

My pc starts up normal, but right after the desktop appears and loads cacheman, and zone alarm, ans MSoffice shortcut bar, it appears it stops loading the rest of the programs, like Mcafee. it's like a 2-4 min idle then it loads mcafee..

During this idle, i can use most programs, but I can;t use winexp because i doesn;t show the content of the HD. I can;t use MSoutlookexpress or internet explorer, because i can;t it won;t get me online.

I also have a problem with my HD space dissapearing... somehow my disk space goes away. I lost 100 mb of disk space while writing this down. the longer i have my pc on, the more space i lose. When i get a low disk space warning, i restart my pc and i get back all the lost disk space. On Diskkeeper all the space i lose while my pc is on, appears like a huge red block of fragmented data, which i can only get rid of by restarting.

I'm running winXPpro, with mcafee antivirus, updated. 512 MB, 20 GB, 1.4GHz.

    HELP.

I'm not a big fan of McAfee, but out of curiosity did you have Norton installed previously on that machine? I can tell you from experience that those two programs will make you think the system has locked when they're in the same box.

If not then you may want to look to see what processes are running as you may have picked up a not-so-friendly utility from a website you visited.

Run Ad-aware 1st followed by Spybot S&D, these will remove 99% of spyware though seeing as you've had Norton on that before it might be best to run RegCleaner to get rid of any Norton entries that still maybe on your system. Once you've run all that then run HijackThis and post the results so we can see if you have any other problems.

another train of thought... how large is your page file, and how much free space is on your hard drive? If the total amount of your pagefile leaves less than 500mb on your hd untouched, then it can cause big problems. also, when was the last time you defragented. on a smaller hd, if it is fragmented it will be placing the pagefile into 500 different spaces.

just another thought... make sure you have any boot time scans switched off.

wayout44: I'll post results as soon as I have them.

Assassin: my HD Free space is 8.50 GB, including paging file (750 Mb). System fragmentation is not and issue, I use diskkeeper and defragment my HD almost every day.

    thanks

I still have that idle time during startup. I used to startup in about 85 seconds, now it still starts up fast, but then it;s idle for more than 2 minutes, then it continues with startup.... it's not a slow startup like when you have 20 programs loading, it just stops the stratup process, but meanwhile i can work with certain programs in my pc, as normal.

Now, my HD problem with losing space during the time the pc is on, appears to have gone. But, can't confirm it yet, since i havent had the pc on long enoght to tell it's gone.

    Thanks

You dont really need cacheman to be running in the background because once you have applied settings you dont have to have it running for them to work. And you dont need realsched.exe running that just gets annoying. And whats that spam inspector? is that some type of email spam filter? I dont really need office to be running unless you really want to. I find it to be really uncessary and not evry helpful

EDIT: You might want to check out the winxp tweaking guide. And many other people have had this same problem and i told them to run system mechanic and it fixed it.

There are a lot of Internet Explorer toolbars and extra context menus that you can remove, unless you actually want them. There are also a number of startup program that should be unnecessary.

Out of all of those, the only one that should be kept running is Zone Alarm. They are unnecessary and cause the delay, along with slowing down the computer in general.
