Default missing files after reinstalling xp, can i recover?

i have 3 partitions on my hard drive, 1 is for xp, 1 for programs, and 1 for my downloads. i decided to reinstall xp after having problems with xp. i formated the partition with xp in it and installed xp in that partition, while leaving the other partitions alone. after finishing i noticed that none of the files were in the other 2 partitions exept one useless file. I then noticed that the partitions werent empty, they had the same amount of space used up before i formated.

i was wondering if i could get these files back by some sort of way or are these files lost even though i didnt do a thing to those partitions?

This sounds like an odd one, three things I can suggest:

one) Goto disk management and check the status of the disks, if they are not mounted, mount them, if they were "dynamic discs" then "import them" - both options are drop down menus when you right click on one of the affected disks.

two) Right click on one of the drives in Exploroer, goto properties, security tab. and make sure you have access to this drive, if not "take ownership of it".

three) it could simply be they are all hidden files/directories, so make sure you go into folder options and select to "view all files, including system/hiden files" and also untick "hide protected operating system files"

    Hope that helps
