Angry My computer freezes completely at random

I've got a big and very anoying problem: My pc freezes completely at no particular order. Sometimes it happens during browsing, or during downloading, or when installing software. It also happens when scanning with TrendMicro Internet Security 2005, PestPatrol, Evidence Eliminator or AdAware. I tried to scan my pc in safe mode and found no virus or pest!
I think the problems first started when I installed MS Office XP Pro with all it's updates and service packs.

Is there anyone out there who can help me with this problem? It's really getting on my nerves! What do I do? Just format my HDD and reinstall?

I have to say that i'm far from being a computer expert, so if you can help I would appreciate it VERY, VERY much!!

Have you tried using msconfig and disabling all startup items?

goto start, run, "msconfig" without the "" and open it, on the new window, tick "selective startup" and then untick "load startup items".

Reboot and see how that does.

    Hey Gary!

Sorry for my late reaction! The problems with my pc have gotten worse, When my pc is finally started-up, it takes about 10 minutes before the damn thing gets jammed again!!
I tried as you suggested but had no luck! What's next? Format C?

    I would recommend several things

1/ Do you have any virus protection and have you kept it up to date as you could have a virus.

2/ Do you have any anti spyware software on your machine as spyware/adware can cause no end of problems if not I would recommend getting some.

3/ Check the space available on your C: drive and if there if less than 10% remaining then try and remove any un required data.

    4/ Defrag the drive

5/ in command line use SFC ie type sfc /scannow in command prompt

6/ you could try checking the registry of the machine if you have a utility that can do this and remove any invalid entries.

    Thanks for the advice Raggy,

When I scan for viruses with Trend Micro Internet Security 2005 or PestPatrol spyware my pc freezes again and not even my mousepointer is moving! I started my pc in the safe mode and was able to scan for viruses and spyware. No viruses and just some little spyware

I also checked the available discspace wich is just under 40%.

    What do you mean with:
5/ in command line use SFC ie type sfc /scannow in command prompt
I defrag my disc and..... the damn thing froze again.

    Any more advice?

    Back up...

First give us your system specs. CPU, motherboard, RAM, video card, OS, serivice packs... CPU-Z (in my signature) can help you find out all this if you don't know.

The fact that it may have started after you installed MS Office XP certainly does point to a possible culprit. For starters, try uninstalling that. The thing is, it leaves a prorgam runng (which remain when uninstalled, though) called the Language Bar, or ctfmon.exe. For help on permanently removing it (though that's almost impossible), see this Microsoft Knowledge Base article. I wouldn't be too suprised if it's actually causing the lockups.

If that doesn't do anything, you can also try posting a HijackThis log (also in my signature).

sfc is a system file checker that is built into windows here http://www.computerhope.com/sfc.htm is some information about the command. It is rather usefull if you are running into problems that might be related to system files.

    Yawgm0th,

At first: many thanks to you and everyone else for helping me

To give you the info you need, here are the specs:
    CPU: Intel Pentium 4 1300Mhz,
    Motherboard: Intel D850GB
    Memory: 384 MB (RDRAM)
    Video: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 64MB
OS: Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2

I uninstalled Office XP Pro, as explained in your link but ctfmon.exe is still running, no matter what I try.

I also include the Hijack log:

It's possible that you simply have more programs running than you can handle. Very little RAM and a weak processor don't handle that many background apps very well. I don't think it's likely, since that generallly would just cause extreme slowdown, not freezing, but removing some of the startup entries you don't need via msconfig would be a start. You don't really need anything except any drivers (ie your lexmark drivers) and your antivirus and firewall (other security/privacy programs should be run after boot, not as startup programs, unless you like things going slowly). On top of that, the guides at www.tweakguides.com ought to help you make things faster, particularly the XP guides.

A quick look through the other stuff in the HijackThis log shows that it's probably entirely stuff you want and not some sort of spyware or virus.

If you uninstall Office XP, remove the msconfig entry for ctfmon.exe, and follow the MS KB article I linked to, you should at least be able to get ctfmon to stop starting up at boot, though it could come back.
