For starters, is it a legal installation of Windows XP (it is Windows XP, right?)? Is it Home, or Professional?

Make sure he has the latest updates and drivers, too. Windows XP usually wants to reactivate when a certain amount of certain hardware gets changed.

I have the exact same problem. I upgraded from Me to XP home(upgrade). I activated it, it said thank you. Each Time I boot the pc I must reactivate it. It always comes back congratulations on you activation. I called the help line, explained my problem, they had me copy a bunch of files from the CD and change a setting in my registery. We thought it was fixed but now it does it every time "before you log on you must activate windows" This is a legit program. I just bought it last week.(2nd largest retailer) I have installed it 4 different times, always the same thing. I sat in one setting and rebooted 27 times...ask the same thing, activate. I do it, pc runs fine. Very frustraiting. I have now reverted back to Me and stuck my $99.00 Xp upgrade program in the corner. All my othe pc's in the house upgraded fine (yes, each has it's own licensed program) I see I am not the only one who has this problem. MS customer support was very helpful but we could just not pin point the problem and it seems I am now out 99 bucks (and a 1.5 hr international phone call)
PS:I also installed every patch MS offers via update.

I removed your previous post regarding a pirated version of Windows and thought you would have taken the hint. Apparently not. We do not work with people who are looking for ways to bypass the security features within Windows. Please refrain from this type of posting in our forums.
