Probably a bad install, if you havent done much on it then mabey try another clean install.

ok maybe so... imma tell u the whole story so please bare with me...
i used to have a HD 4200rpm 128kcache so i figured why not use my other HD, 7200rpm, 8mb cache... so i put my windows cd on my cdrom, and put my cd-rom as my firstboot. then it says "press any keey to boot on cd..." but my keyboard wont work, cant press anything.... then for some reason i tried booting from cd-rom with my harddrive unplugged, then it booted up on my cd... so i was like o what the heck... so the next time i booted on my cd, i plugged my hard drive in at the same time it booted my cd... then here we go, i go it installed... lol... other incident i had, it says "NTLDR is missing" <--- before i did the plugg HD thingy...

well tell me if u dont understand ill try to re explain it...

OH YES I understand I just instaled XP64 on an older 10GB 2MB cache HD and got that damned NTDLR thing too, All I had to do was make sure the jumper switch was on master, Cable Select didnt work in this case, fist time it has failed for me. Any way yeah make sure the jumper(s) [depending on the brand they may have more than one], are in the master position.

Yes, it would clear all sofware problems, set your cdrom to boot first and install xp to the sata drive.
